2022 At 78 RPM-Week 6

Hello!  It's a new month, and I've got something a little special for you in honor of my having made it this far. This week I've got two records featuring special artist introductions to new songs from the late forties! I've shared some intros like these with you from other, later decades, but never anything this early. I was pretty excited when these records popped up at The Internet Archive since they so rarely show up in real life, and when they do, they command some big bucks. They're very short, so you're not getting a lot of listening time out of them, but the enjoyment it great! The record above features introductions to Spike Jones' newest Christmas song from all the members of his band, each one doing a short skit, and then there's a full band version. This was a banded record, and there was a little bit of a problem when they recorded the last band, so I had to edit the beginning a bit with a fade, so you miss the start, but I don't think you'd notice if I didn't tell you. The second record features intros to more new Christmas music for 1948 from Vaughn Monroe, Larry Green, Freddy Martin, Sammy Kaye and someone named Eddie Arnold. I'm sure they meant Eddy Arnold, but that's what it says. I'm sure you'll enjoy these as much as I did, and I'll be back next week with more actual music.

I'm a little pressed for time here, so the fridge door story is going to have to wait.

2022 At 78 RPM-Week 5

Moving right along, we're at week five already this year, and it's still only January! The Christmas goodies from 78's just keep right on a'coming even though the season has long passed. As you can see from the labels, it's another varied collection of songs from a wide variety of artists. You never know what's going to turn up at The Internet Archive, and I'm trying to bring you the very best of it. Wait, who am I kidding, I'm not trying to bring you you the best, I'm trying to bring it all to you. Or at least all the Christmas music. So enjoy this latest taste of what I've found, and come back in another week for more!

In other news, I'm still recovering from the heart attack, but that's moved to the back burner lately. My girlfriend's parents were in town, and one of them got a little ill. He took a Covid test, no sign of that. But the next day, he tested again, and it was positive. So then there were three of us in my tiny condo with a positive Covid patient. Luckily we're all vaccinated and boostered, and after after almost a week together, no one else got the Covid. I got whatever he had on that first day, and tried to cough myself to death for a few days, but I'm still testing negative, and the cough is almost gone at this point. It's an adventure around here every day I tell you!

2022 At 78 RPM-Week 4

Another week, and another great selection of Christmas tunes from the seemingly endless depths of The Internet Archive. I know Christmas is long passed at this point, but if you've still got that Christmas spirit in your heart, these are some great songs for you. From a couple of singing cowboys, through a few different big bands, all the way to some female vocalists you've likely never heard of, there's a little bit of everything here in this batch. I think there are also a couple of things I previously shared back in 2020, but from different records. Sometimes I can't remember which songs I've shared and which ones I haven't, so if I don't remember it right away, I grab whatever new records pop up. Then later when I tag it I will see that the tag has already been used, and that kinda clues me in. Sometimes the new versions are better, sometimes they aren't, but you just never know. It's only a couple of the records, so I hope that doesn't turn anyone off of downloading these lost gems. For the curious, I'm still doing fine, trying to eat right and choke down some pills twice a day that would make a horse cough.  So it goes. I'll be fine. And if you're still with me, here's the link. Enjoy!

2022 At 78 RPM-Week 3

Welcome back to the continuing series of 78 RPM Christmas records here in 2022.  It's been a particularly trying week here at the homestead, but I'm not letting that stop me from posting these great records, care of The Internet Archive. They've graciously provided the recordings of these records to all, and I'm just cleaning them up a little bit and sharing them with y'all in little curated batches. Well, I say they're curated, but they're really just random collections of records that I happen to have finished tagging. But they're still nice collections. I've been doing this for three weeks now, and if you don't have them, you can find the previous two weeks here and here. If you've got the previous downloads already, then you know exactly the type of fun music you can expect to hear.  Have a look at the labels to see what you're going to get in the download and have at it!

PS-Just for future reference, I'm going to mention this here. I had a heart attack this past Sunday. A very mild heart attack, I should emphasize. I had some troubling symptoms while at the grocery store, so I finished shopping, took home the groceries and went to the ER. Sure enough, about 6 hours later they told me the markers were in my blood indicating a heart attack. Next day they put a stent into an artery that was 99% blocked, and the day after that I came home. Heart care is very different than it was a few years ago. With proper care, it's certainly not a death sentence. Now, if I can just give up salt and red meat...

2022 at 78 RPM-Week 2

Time for the second installment of what I hope is a series that will last all year long! It's a collection of Christmas 78's, all sourced from The Internet Archive and lightly processed by me for slightly better sound. My goal is to highlight the stuff that's available over there in their Great 78 collection, and to provide you with some listenable music that you've probably not heard before. Their collection is great, both deep and wide, and every month they add to it, so there's always something new to be found. I'm concentrating on the Christmas side of it, but there is all sorts of music there to be discovered. There's no rhyme or reason to what I'm putting out here in this collection, it's just a random selection of the 78s that I've collected and tagged most recently. You'll have to look at the beautiful selection of labels to see what's in the pile, I'm not going to type it all out for you. So without further ado, here's the link, and I'll see you next week!

More Than A Feeling

This is the last post of the 2021 Christmas sharity season, I promise. There's nothing else in the pile that I'm really wanting to put out there. Keep in mind, however, that I'm going to try to post part two of the 2022 series of Christmas 78s tomorrow and every Saturday thereafter for the rest of the year. That's the plan at least. So you're not going to have to go completely cold turkey on the Christmas music for the foreseeable future. And today is another very special post that's well outside my usual milieu as it's 100% rock music, about as far removed as you could get from the usual 50s & 60s pop and EZ listening that this blog usually explores. (At least before rap music came along. Rap and hip-hop seem to have changed everything, much as Elvis changed music in the 50s and The Beatles changed it again in the 60s. But I digress...) I found a copy of this record at a store in NYC a couple years ago when I happened to find myself there close to Christmas. I must have hit fifteen different stores over about three days before I got sick and spent the last couple days in bed. I still managed to spend a small fortune during my stay and had a healthy sized carry on that really confused the TSA at the airport. I have yet to share a lot of stuff from that collection, but maybe someday. This is a local Boston-area comp that only contains five songs, but what great songs they are. This is the sort of music that you buy local comps for, but so rarely find. If you've never heard this record, you need to download it and listen to it right now. If you've heard of it, then you've probably already tracked down a copy because you knew how badly you needed it. This is A Boston Rock Christmas (Boston Rock 12" 45 RPM BR-001, Stereo, 1983).

1. Sonny Columbus & His Del Fuegos-That Punchbowl Full Of Joy
2. Native Tongue-Do You Hear What I Hear?
3. SSD-Jolly Old Saint Nicholas
4. Jeff & Jane-Jingle Bells
5. Christmas-O Holy Night

Susie's Back

Something made me think of this old share today, and I realized that it hadn't seen the light of day in over nine years now. I checked, and I still had the original WAV files on my computer, so I re-encoded it in a better bitrate than I did when I first shared this in 2012. If you want to hear the Christmas musings of a couple of puppets, and featuring the voice of Tammy Faye Baker, then this share is for you! Please be brave and download Susie & Allie-Christmas With Susie & Allie (PTL Club PTL-LP-1848, Stereo, 1984).

1. Frosty The Snowman
2. White Christmas
3. Winter Wonderland
4. O Christmas Tree
5. We Wish You A Merry Christmas
6. Jingle Bells
7. Away In The Manger
8. The Christmas Story
9. Joy To The World

Not Normal

A little something outside my comfort zone here today for Epiphany. I thought I was going to end up the shares yesterday at the end of the twelve days, but I had this and one more record left in the pile. I had recorded this for my own enjoyment, but I decided I'd go ahead and share it since it's kinda rare, and a little out there. It's much later than most of my other shares, much more rock-leaning, and even a little bit lascivious. (I even had to censor the cover just a bit to post here, but the original is in the download. Can't have naked breasts showing up around here, it's a family friendly kinda place. Just pretend those sheep aren't wearing lingerie though...) Anyhow, this is supposed to be a comedy album, but I didn't find it all that humorous. Your mileage may vary. This is The Scrooge Bros.-Commercial Christmasland (Enigma E1043, Stereo, 1983).

1. I Wish You Would Take Your Hat Off
2. Glory To The Store Displays
3. What Smell Is This
4. Jingleside
5. Deck Yourself
6. The First Greenback
7. Cylent Night (The end of this track is a locked groove. It would have played on forever if I'd let it, but I faded it out after a while.)
