Hi Ho Ho Ho Ho

Time for the final installment of our trilogy of recordings from child prodigy Heintje. This one seems to have been released in the same year as the last one, which doesn't seem right. Who would release two Christmas albums in the same season? There must be something I'm missing here. Maybe it's just that the fine folks over at Discogs don't know what they're talking about, wouldn't be the first time. Anyhow, here he is again, this is Heintje-When The Christmas-Bells Are Ringing (Polydor (Canada) 2310 148, Stereo, 1971). Wait a sec, is this an English-language release of that last record? My German isn't good enough to figure this stuff out. I don't think so, but there is a bit of duplication here. The truth will out.

1. When The Christmas-Bells Are Ringing
2. Silent Night
3. Winter Wonderland
4. O Christmas Tree
5. Jingle Bells
6. Little Toy-Tin Soldier
7. White Christmas
8. Little Drummerboy
9. O Thou Joyful Day
10. Wintertide
11. Cowboy Carol
12. From Heaven High The Angels Come

  1. Several of the songs are English versions of songs he recorded on the German album (Little Drummer Boy, Winter Wonderland, White Christmas, etc) but each album contains songs not on the other.

    1. Thanks for the clarification! I don't want to get into another mess like those Longines Symphonette records...

  2. Thank you, Ernie. I looked him up, and he was a popular artist, but none of these albums show up on his popular albums list.
You are the Best, Ernie !!!

    1. Christmas albums rarely show up on best-of lists, and rightfully so. It takes a really great LP to rise to the top. Phil Spector comes to mind, but that's really a various artist collection with a single producer. Who else released a Christmas album that stands out in their catalog? Elvis? His first Christmas LP is awesome, but is it one of his best albums overall? Maybe...

  3. For some odd reason, my Mother had purchased an 8-track tape of Heintje. As a little kid, I think it was around 1980, I was in our garage playing as my dad was piddling around his work bench. I found on a shelf all these funny looking tapes and this strange machine. So, my dad plugged it into a socket and told me this machine came from an old car of my mothers and he took it out and saved it and all these tapes. He converted the machine so he could use it via a regular electrical outlet.
Heintje's tape was all in German, including his big hit Mama. Most of these tapes were either 4 or 8 track and were made up tapes my mom bought from some guy. I seem to recall a few commercial tapes too, but by 1983 or so, the tapes and machine just vanished to neverland.

    1. 8-tracks were always more popular in cars than in home setups, so I'm not surprised you had a modified car unit to play them.

Oh, that reminds me, your original Christmas card mailed 11/20 showed up today. Thank you very much!

    2. Fast forward to 1986, after I was picked to be trained for the Church Youth Choir my mother, purchased this album for me. This was the 3rd or 4th personal album all my own that I was given. I remember sitting in my room, listening to this album over and over, singing along with Heintje. My favorite song, I can sing it in my sleep, is Cowboy Carol.
Every once in awhile, I find myself singing it. This song, for whatever it is worth, became a solo of mine once I switched back into the Public School system and joined their Junior Highschool Choir. We performed songs during cowboy days as I called it to honor the state wide county fairs that moved around the state in summer and fall.
I usually only performed it with the male members of the Choir as back-up. Until once, we had the girls want to join in. Only once, I did this song as a duet with Marcia to please her.
Anyway, I have never even thought of buying this album online, even though I just noticed it is available.
But, thank you for bringing it back into my memory.

I just love how he pronounces "saddle". I have always tried to sing it this way.

    3. I forgot to mention that I was very surprised when I heard Cowboy Carol because I knew it from elsewhere and under a different title. Up With People sang it on their first Christmas LP, but they called it There'll Be A New World Beginnin' From Tonight. I think you can still download that record in the comments at this link:

That will give you a second version to sing as you dance around the house.

  4. You are welcome. Just think, you get one in red showing up before Easter, hehee.

Oh, I love the song, Cowboy Carol. I have had it on repeat seems forever.

I own my own flat, most people do not own their flat. How I got it is a long story. That being said, after I bought it, I had all the walls added with another sheet of installation, so when I vocalize and sing, I do not drive people crazy.

I am prone to sing at work, and this one song I have been singing these past days. Although I have to sing very softly, but softly is hard to do as a Tenor.

    1. I thought about doing that in my condo, but I think most of the noise coming in or out is through the sliding glass doors, so added insulation on the walls isn't going to help. Maybe I wouldn't have to listen to my neighbor singing along to his records, but I'm not sure it would help...

    2. this building was built in 1915. so you know the walls mostly go back to that time. even though they refurbished it about 10 years when the new owners bought it. that is how i came to live here. i am only 1 of 2 people that i am aware of that own their flat, including one of the owners. so, right from the get go, i had them add this installation to all the walls. the flat is basically soundproof, except the main door and the windows.

I do not do a lot of dancing in my flat, except when i really need to. most of the music i listen to at home is relaxing easy-instramental.
although, you offered a few kickers this sharing season that i had to share with a few friends.

like this album i had it on, and my neighbour let herself in to water her plants that i house during the winter. i was listening to this album, and she yells from the plant room, b-ah (a special name i am called by by special people), you sound wonderful today. then i told her it was heintje. heintje singing in english? most only know he sings in german or dutch.
so, to please her, heintje and i sang a duet of cowboy carol.

  5. Cowboy Carol

    Refrain:
There'll be a new world beginnin' from tonight!
There'll be a new world beginnin' from tonight!
When I climb up to my saddle,
Gonna take him to my heart!
    There'll be a new world be-ginnin' from to-night!

Right across the prairie, Clear across the valley,
Straight across the heart of every man,
There'll be a right new brand of livin'
    That'll sweep like lightnin' fire
And take a-way the hate from every land.

    Refrain: - repeat

Yoi, yippee! We're gonna ride the trail!
Yoi, yippee! We're gonna ride today!
When I climb up to my saddle,
Gonna take him to my heart! …
    There'll be a new world beginnin' from to-night;
    from to-night!...

    1. Sounds about right, but it never specifies Christmas or Jesus. Was this originally past of a show or something to provide context?

    2. HI Ernie,
You have to read into the lyrics to know that they are referring to the birth of Jesus, the three wise men, how one cowboy says he will take him into his heart, i.e. Jesus, that because Jesus has been born, a new world will beginning from tonight, i.e. they saw the Star. That the news will spread everywhere and into the heart of man. It will spread like fire and will be in every mans heart, and we will be all living a new life, think Christian life or holy life.

Even as a child, when I first heard this song, I figured it out, before I asked my mother if this was correct.

Maybe it was because I was raised a Catholic and that the birth of Jesus, etc. was important to us, or at least to my family, i.e. my mother.

just type this in. great information.

When i wanted to sing this song as a solo piece, my Choir Masters in Grade and Junior High Schools had never heard of it. Only my Choir Master in Senior High School knew of this song.
