At The Crossroads

Here's a record for you that I thought was going to be another run-of-the-mill religious record but turned out to be better than I expected. I think these folks may be from Florida but I couldn't find out too much about them from a cursory search. I'm sure someone will fill me in with the details, assuming there's anyone out there still paying attention. Christmas was a long time ago, and even the twelve days of Christmas have ended. Not sure how long I'm going to keep going, but I've got a little more in the pile still. This is The Crossroads Singers-Holiday Souvenirs (The Crossroads Singers CRS 1011, Stereo, 1980). Nice package here with a custom inner sleeve. It's all there in the download for you.

1. We Need A Little Christmas
2. Silver Bells
3. Winter Wonderland
4. Home For The Holidays
5. Feliz Navidad
6. White Christmas
7. The Christmas Song
8. Holiday Souvenirs
9. Silent Night
10. Little Drummer Boy
11. Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming
12. Angels We Have Heard On High
13. O Holy Night
14. O Come, O Come, Immanuel
15. Song Of The Redeemer: I. The Ancient Song; II. The Brightest Star

  3. 9. Crossroads Singers. The Crossroads church formed a special group of singers called "The Crossroads Singers" who entertain at the worship services and conduct special concerts at Gainesville and around the country.(14) They have produced several albums for sale through their ministry, including a Christmas album entitled "Holiday Souvenirs." In their advertising brochure, the Crossroads church explains the function of this group,

The Crossroads Singers are an integral part of the total work of the congregation. Their local concerts serve as an effective way to share with the community the message of committed Christian living. The Singers are used in conjunction with evangelistic crusades, vacation Bible schools, and special services.

    3. Snow might be gone by then, and you'll be off the Christmas music...

    4. Maybe, but we have very cold freezing temperatures outside. The weather is unpredictable.

For you, I will put it on my mp3 player now. I had tomorrow Monday free, but my cient wants me to go with her up to Sweden for some special organization work. So I will let you know Monday night or Tuesday morning.

    5. Hi Ernie,
Well, once I started my travels this morning, I stated to listen to this album...
      1. Did you look at your copy of it? Is it numbered, as in 1 of 50? Oops that might be too many.
You sure seem to have a collectors item in/on your hands.
While I admire their approach to these songs, that is all I admire.
They basically were off key from the first word, note, or whatever that came out of their mouths. I had to stop listening about half way through to listen to the likes of: Bel Canto Voices, Plymouth Festival Orch - from Buster, The CSU Chamber Singers and The Canterbury Choir for some "real" quality singing. Even, Sy Mann on the organ was an improvement as were Shorty and Betty.
I finally did finish this album, but it was a hard go.
If they are representive of the church...
      enough said.
I will centainly keep it in my files, but I will label it "off key singing".
It is a shame, as their versions of these songs were interesting, if only they had been done by polished singers.

    6. Could be that they limited themselves to volunteer members of their church, so they had to work with that they had. Maybe that's why the LP is hard to find. :)

    1. Well, I wish I put stuff out year-round, but it's only Christmas and Christmas-In-July for me. Thanks for sticking close by though.

  5. Ernie, you know me. I check your blog everyday, during July, and from American Thanksgiving until you tell us you have nothing more to share. I look forward to seeing your blog every day :)

  7. I'm still here! Not always punctual, but you're always on my radar and I'm always grateful for all the hard work you do. Delighted to see "We Need a Little Christmas" and "Feliz Navidad" on the track list - love the more up tempo songs, especially on a private record. I can't wait to listen!

    1. Always interesting to hear non-religious songs done by these religious groups. I've heard a few nuns take stabs at Silver Bells and White Christmas, it's not often Whoopie Goldberg level excitement, but it's frequently something. :)
