The Ten Inchers Of Christmas-Part I

It's the tenth day of December and I'm going to celebrate this otherwise unremarkable day by sharing out a handful of Christmas records that just happen to be 10" in diameter instead of the usual 12". Record buffs know that 10" records date all the way back to the 78 era. In fact, when flat records first came out (as opposed to cylinders), a ten inch diameter quickly become the standard size, and remained that way all the way though the end of 78s in the early fifties. Sure, there were smaller ones and bigger ones, but the vast majority were 10" in diameter. When LPs came along in 1949, manufacturers had a lot of equipment that was still set up to handle the smaller diameter records, so they coexisted for a while with the 12" size, but they eventually fell out of favor and continued on as a sort of niche product to this very day. As might be expected, a 10" record holds less music than a 12" one and more than the 7" records that typically only feature one song per side. Now that you have a little bit of info on what I'm talking about, here's a Christmas record for you to download. This is a nice collection of melodies as played on music boxes from the collection of George And Madeline Brown, The Christmas Music Box (Cook Laboratories Sounds Of Our Times 10" 33 RPM Music Box 1011, Mono). Stay tuned all day for more!

    1. That might be why it looked familiar. Sorry about that. I may step on your toes more than once today as there are only do many 10" Christmas records out there.

Love that label though, if I haven't said so already. If I had an otherwise unplayable copy I think I'd make it into a real clock. :)
