Grand Award (Not Command)

Keeping with the theme of the Command label, or more correctly, labels associated with Enoch Light, here's a Christmas record from his earlier label, Grand Award. I had no idea this existed, so I was quite shocked when I came across it one day in a pile of badly damaged records. This particular one was pretty rough, with tape holding the front and back together, and the record in between was in rough shape as well. But I took my time, cleaned the vinyl well, and got a surprisingly good recording out of it. And the songs were just great! I was very impressed. I've listened to this one quite a bit since I recorded it, and I don't do that with a lot of my albums. It's actually a compilation of several artists, including Enoch Light himself, Artie Malvin, Mike Stewart, and some other people that I haven't heard of. But again, the music is just wonderful. This is certainly one of my favorite finds and favorite shares this year. And for a label known for it's hideous album covers, this one isn't too bad. I spent a couple of hours trying to remove the tape in Photoshop, and I think I did a pretty good job. But the cover is secondary to the music. Let me quit gushing about this record while you go download Songs To Sing At Christmas Time (Grand Award G.A. 33-348). The record itself calls this Christmas Comes To Our House, which initially made me think the cover had the wrong vinyl in it, but all the numbers match. Maybe this is a reissue...

This album has been a family favorite for over 40 years. Our copy is worn out from being played non-stop every Christmas. And yep, the cover goes with the album.

I found your blog when I googled Grand Award. E Light had another company before this one, also HQd in NJ. I have several of these,Grand Award, Command and Project 3. The man was an excellent producer and business man.
I'm not computer savy, but can you email me or point me in the right direction to copy Lps and post them like you do? I have a ton of records from the late fifities to the end of the vynyl era covering everthing from Merrygoround music to classical. I wish I had time to listen to them all.
Nice site. Good Luck. Ill tap in again. my email: andy5775@hotmail.com.

I never expect to actually get a hit when I searched in Google. I also scanned and digitized this LP from my dad's collection. His copy is still in good shape. I did it some years back but either didn't scan the back of the LP jacket or lost the file. Do you have a back scan?

I always try to put the scan of the back cover into my shares, unless it's a generic back cover with nothing but ads on it. This one has the back cover in it, if I recall correctly. There's some good stuff on here, too. I'm gonna reshare this one and some other Command/Grand Award stuff later int he season.

Hi this is Kathy. I've had this treasured album in my family for about 50 years, I grew up with it, and when my Mom cleared out the house to retire to Florida, I was the lucky kid to receive custody. I'd like to share it with my siblings and did an online search and was thrilled to find a photo and info about it on your blog! Sorry not too savy about blogs and was nervous to click the link to download a copy of this album. Is there another option, such as you selling me a CD copy of this album? My album cover is also held together by old decaying browning/yellow masking tape and we don't have a record player with a needle that works anymore, so right now my album is simply a Christmas decoration that sits on the 'mantle' at Christmas time! Appreciating any help or direction you can give me and thanks Ernie. Kathy

Kathy, Ernie appears to be "retired" at the moment and the share appears to be missing. Check my comment above dated Dec 25, 2006. If you like, I can post a share for you or send you a cd.

I'm responding to your December 28, 2013 regarding my album: Songs To Sing At Christmas Time (Grand Award G.A. 33-348), which I would dearly like a copy of on CD if I could buy it from you. Would you please get in touch chaos37 at yahoo dot com. Thanks I look forward to hearing from you.
