Stereo Lanin

Here's another LP that I'm going to upgrade from my old mono copy to a great new stereo transfer. I love the way that Lester Lanin incorporates the electric guitar into his big band sound. It's not at all the sort of thing you expect, but it works quite well. (Just ask Brian Setzer.) I know you'll enjoy this, so just go ahead and download Lester Lanin And His Orchestra-Christmas Dance Party (Epic BN 547, Stereo, 1959). I do need to say something about the hideous way they've indicated the stereo on this LP cover. It's pretty typical to just lower the cover photo from the mono version and add a stereo banner on LPs from this era, but this one is just ugly. That plain white space across the top just ruins this cover.

1. Jingle Bells
2. White Christmas; I'll Be Home For Christmas; Home For The Holidays; Happy Holiday
3. Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairies
4. Here Comes Santa Claus; Frosty The Snowman
5. Silver Bells; Oh, Christmas Tree (O Tannenbaum); We Wish You A Merry Christmas
6. Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer
7. Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town
8. Deck The Halls With Boughs Of Holly; The Wassail Song; Good King Wenceslas
9. Christmas Night In Harlem
10. The Christmas Song; I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day; Christmas In Killarney
11. Winter Wonderland
12. Sleigh Ride
13. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!; Auld Lang Syne; A Hot Time In The Old Time Tonight

  1. This album is a favorite of mine. I don't have my own copy, just your previous share. I really appreciate the upgrade!

  2. I found your site about a week ago, and it has been a privilege to read your comments and partake of your generosity. It is obvious from your posts that you are a connoisseur and very dedicated to your passions. I am only too grateful for your sharing these wonderful Christmas gems with all of us. So far I have been very satisfied with your favorite selections. This latest by Lester Lanin is a jewel! My husband convinced me to download it (the cover art turned me off. Sorry, he looks like a letch!) But it just goes to show that you can't judge a book by it's cover, or in this case, an album by it's cover art! This was a great listen. I can't thank you enough for your work and for sharing the Christmas spirit. Happy Christmas!

  4. ernie, i'm loving this album! i've sampled a few of your shares, and i was starting to think (as with the current home dec trend of "mid-century modern", aka my parents' ugly furniture) that maybe i am too old for them to sound retro-hip to me, but too young for them to resonate with pleasant memories. well, this vinyl is just the right shade of avocado green! :-)

i'm no music critic, so i don't know what makes me like this so much. maybe the syncopated guitar? those lively horns? the accordion (accordion? really? awesome!) is that a _tuba_?! these folks sound like they're having a great time making this music, and i'm having a great time listening!

thanks so much for this one! (for all the rest, too - presents are always fun to unwrap, even the ones that go in the re-gifting pile!)

  5. For heaven's sake, how did I ever miss this one the first time around? This is the most outstanding Christmas album I have ever heard! The upbeat sounds of this album are as relevant today as back then--gotta love that guitarist.

Thanks for the outstanding work that you do in locating and recording these albums. I have transferred tapes to CD before, and I must admit I lack the patience for it. So I cannot express my appreciation adequately to you. "Thanks"...sounds kinda lame to me!

  6. Thanks for sharing this! I previuously had 2 of these tracks on the "A Big Band Christmas" CD and loved them. It is great to get the whole album. Thanks again,

    Laura

  7. The cover says, "Christmas Dance Party: Volume 9." What and where are the other eight volumes? It is really a great Big Band holiday album, thanks for sharing it, and the new stereo version.
