One Of The Three Suns

I've kinda been avoiding all the Three Suns Christmas music every since Real Gone brought out their Ding Dong Dandy Christmas on CD because I figure they'll eventually get around to the rest of the catalog.  But that doesn't seen to be happening in a big hurry, so I'm going to sneak in this one single from 1951 that I really love.  I have quite a history with this one, and it is, as far as I can remember, one of the only records I've ever shared out on the blog that I didn't own.  Now, the one I'm sharing tonight is mine, but the original share was a copy sent in by friend-of-the-blog Pete before I had been able to secure my own copy.  Tonight's share is a re-encode of a 2012 share, but I think it sound great!  If you've never heard it, please download and enjoy The Three Suns-Uncle Mistletoe (With vocal refrains by Texas Jim Robertson) b/w Sleigh Ride (RCA Victor 7" 45 RPM 47-4323, Mono, 1951).

  1. Thanks for the shout-out. ;-) Still one of my favorites! Now to acquire the earlier 10" releases...

  2. Hi Pete! Good to hear from you.

As fate would have it, I brought home that 10" record the other day. Had the 45 box set for years, I remember buying it at Bananas, but not the 10" version. Not sure I can get it recorded before the season ends, but there is always next year. :)

  3. i recall some discussion here or elsewhere about this song, both the three suns and the eddy howard versions, the of crux of which was… this could be the creepiest christmas song ever… something that dirty old men sing when they’re luring children into fates unknown. in recent years, i’ve have to escort my 90-something mother to the christmas parties of quasi-relatives (the step-this, the in-law that, the twice and thrice removed). you can tell these people weren’t expecting me, only the batty old lady that they thought they could hit up for money. and of course, there are always plenty of great-grand this-and-thats running around. i don’t mind them. it’s their parents (mostly the mothers, who watch too much tv) i mind. i’ll be standing next to the christmas tree in a room full of people and some kid will start in talking to me like they’re apt to do when all of a sudden i’ll have a young mother in my face hissing “who are you? why are you talking to my child?”. and with luck, someone within earshot will explain. but in my view, the damage has been done. and while i’d like to say “i’ll wait in the car, if you’d like” or just grab the granny and go, instead i remember ‘uncle mistletoe’ (which has become a personal favorite of mine) and start humming. yes, ‘tis the season...

  5. Texas Jim Robertson sounds like an odd match with the Three Suns. Must listen to this.

I am sure I have that 10-incher. I had no idea it was elusive. I am not a fan of the Suns, even though I have most of their records. (Go figure.)

  6. If memory serves, he showed up on a couple of Three Suns records about this time. I had to add his name to this entry on Discogs earlier this year. Not sure what the connection was though.

I dunno if it's rare, but that was the first time I'd seen a copy. I find the 45s a lot, but rarely the complete set in the box.
