2022 At 78 RPM-Part 30

Week 30! Wow! I've been at this for a long time now. And I've got thirty more tracks to add to the enormous pile of music I've shared so far this year from the 78's at The Internet Archive. For the first time all year, my backlog has dropped to below 400 tracks, which is still a lot of music, but I've been keeping it over 500 tracks for a long time. But the good news is that they just started dumping records for July last Thursday, so hopefully I can replenish my supply to keep sharing for a long time to come. (I just checked and it looks like there's still goodies being shared out today, so I think it's going to be a big boost to my pile!) Christmas In July 2022-Part 14

Good morning! I'm back with more of the usual Christmas in July fun for you today. It's part 14 of our journey through the month, and if memory serves this is as far as we got last year (though that was in August). Rest assured we've got a little further to go still this time around, though not as far as some years past. Just hard to find this kind of stuff lately, probably from a lack of trying. Anyhow, let's see what treasures are in the pile today.

2. Glory Be To God by St. Olaf Choir-Kenneth Jennings, Director from Sing For Joy (St. Olaf Records E-269, Stereo). Dunno if I've mentioned this in any of the other times I've shared tracks from this record, but even though I pulled these tracks from a St. Olaf record, they originally appeared on a multi-disc set for The Book Of The Month club, with each side being a different college choir doing Christmas music. Pretty sure I have that one somewhere in the archives.

3. Alleluia, We Have Seen His Star by University Of Miami Concert Choir Under The Direction Of Donald Oglesby, Ricky Hardy-Organist, Pianist, Soloist-Zobeida Perez from Alleluia-Sing With New Songs (World Library Publications 7912 (Side 2: Christmas), Stereo, 1981). Lots of these choir things today, must be getting towards the end of the month.

4. Greensleeves by William Harrison from Easy Trumpet Solos (Music Minus One MMO 7025-29, Stereo). Still waiting for someone to add trumpet to one of these tracks. Probably going to be waiting a long time...

5. The Birthday Of A King by Gordon MacRae-Orchestra Conducted By Van Alexander from Hallowed Be Thy Name (Capitol ST1466, Stereo, 1961). A rerun, but a good one to revisit.

6. Waltz Of The Flowers (From "The Nutcracker") by Hal Mooney And His Orchestra from Ballet With A Beat (Mercury Perfect Presence Sound Series PPS 6017, Stereo, 1961). Another rerun, but a really good one to revisit.

7. O Little Town Of Bethlehem by The Choir Of The First Presbyterian Church Of Dearborn, Alexander J. Turco-Organist And Director from Carols And Anthems (No Label H-1496/1497, Mono, 1967). More choir stuff.

The Second Best From Christmas In July Past-Part 7

We're up to part seven of these collections of the second-best tracks from Christmas in July past. That's a lot of music, but I think it's good stuff. Not getting a whole lot of feedback on these collections, but not a lot of people listen to Christmas music in July, and it's not like they're new music. So I get it. But I figure maybe I can hype them up at Christmas proper and more people will get the chance to listen to my collections. I don't think I've mentioned the mosaic artwork on the covers yet.  It's a series of panels on the wall of a church building in downtown Sarasota that I photographed a few months back. I remember thinking in the back of my mind at the time that I would find a use for those pictures, and here they are! Christmas In July 2011-Redux

Forgot about the improved Christmas in July Best-Of collections there for a bit, but I'm back with the updated version from 2011. As I keep saying, I went back and grabbed newer and better rips of many of the tracks here (since I have extensive archives!) in hopes of making the old collection sound a little bit better. This was the biggest collections I ever put together, spanning over two full CDs, though I don't think I ever burned it to disc as such. But that's still the way I think about my collections since I was brought up as CDs came to market. I remember making a few cassette compilations, but not too many.  Today makes an even dozen shares for Christmas in July this year, though I've tried to post a lot more things for you on the other days. It's been hard to find records since I'm not single and can't go hunting every day. But I think we're doing all right here. Here's the new stuff for today.

You may be able to hear something a little off about the introduction to this song (and the one from the same LP the other day). The lady introduces two songs at the same time, and I tried to edit the other one out. I think I did a pretty fair job of it.

2. Introit: Fanfare For Christmas Day by The Arcadia Choir-Barth Dowling, Director from The Arcadia Choir-Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian Church (Mark MC-8011 (Peoria, Illinois), Stereo, 1973). When I first saw this, I thought it was from the two of Arcadia, just up the road about 30 miles. But I was wrong, it's all the way from Illinois. This short intro was the only Christmas content on there, but it was half price, so I got it anyway.

3. Laudi Alla Vergine Maria (From Four Sacred Pieces) by The Columbus Boychoir-Donald Hanson, Director from The Columbus Boychoir Sings At Spoleto's Festival Of Two Worlds (The Columbus Boychoir DB-63073 (Side 1-Sounds Of Christmas), Stereo). Another song from the boys.

4. Thy Little Ones, Dear Lord, Are We (Her Kommer Dine Arme Smaa) by St. Olaf Choir-Kenneth Jennings, Director from Sing For Joy (St. Olaf Records E-269, Stereo). And another song from the Olaf that doesn't make ice cream.

O Tannenbaum by Mechanical Organette Boudoir Model from the LP The Greatest Music Show On Earth-Vol. B (Gay 90's Village 5188 (Recorded At Bellm's Cars And Music Of Yesterday, Sarasota, Florida), Stereo, 1973). I recently found this local LP at a thrift store. It documents a collection of music boxes and band organs that no longer exists, at least not anywhere that I know of. The car part of the museum is still alive and well though, I visited it late last year.

2. Marie Wiegenlied by The Columbus Boychoir-Donald Hanson, Director from The Columbus Boychoir Sings At Spoleto's Festival Of Two Worlds (The Columbus Boychoir DB-63073 (Side 1-Sounds Of Christmas), Stereo). I took this one out of the plastic to record it for you. I can't imagine it was worth too much, even sealed like that.

3. The Christmas Symbol by St. Olaf Choir-Kenneth Jennings, Director-Soloist: Beverly Voth from Sing For Joy (St. Olaf Records E-269, Stereo). Another song from these prolific folks. I think if you poke around, they've got multiple Christmas albums.

4. The Weavers sing We Wish You A Merry Christmas from The Weavers On Tour (Vanguard VSD-6537, Electronically Re-Recorded To Simulate Stereo, 1969). More from these old folkies.

5. Jesus A Wonderful Child by When Singers Meet, Inc., Mass Choir from the sampler album Get On Board The Jubilee Train (Jubilee JSS 1, Stereo). I've shared a whole LP with you from these singers in the past, but when I saw this one track on a sampler album, I knew it was a good selection for Christmas in July.

Almost to the halfway mark of the month, and I'm a little over halfway through my pile of songs to share. I may have figured this out wrong. Hope I can make it to the end of the month, but that's weeks away, no need to worry now.

1. A Spotless Rose by St. Olaf Choir-Kenneth Jennings, Director-Soloist: Robert Smith from Sing For Joy (St. Olaf Records E-269, Stereo). Somehow I doubt that the soloist here is the same guy as sings lead for The Cure, but maybe.

2. From The Nutcracker Suite "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" by Portsmouth Sinfonia-Conductor: John Farley from the LP Portsmouth Sinfonia Plays The Popular Classics (Columbia KC 33049, Stereo, 1973). I like all kinds of stuff, some good, some bad. But this...

3. He Is Born by The Choir Of The First Presbyterian Church Of Dearborn, Alexander J. Turco-Organist And Director, from Carols And Anthems (No Label H-1496/1497, Mono, 1967). That's Dearborn, Michigan, for those of you who aren't from the US. Near Detroit.

4. Winter-Edit by Armando Trovajoli-Sung By Michele Mattera from Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow (Warner Bros W 1552, Mono, 1964). Soundtrack stuff. I think it says 'Edit' because I cut the Winter part out of a longer medley of unrelated stuff. I hope I did that correctly, but we'll likely never know.

5. Smiling In Winter by Spoons from Arias & Symphonies (A&M SP-4920, Stereo, 1982). I think this is another of those three records I found all together in a Goodwill bin in St. Pete.

Christmas In July 2010-Redux

 

Time to revisit Christmas in July 2010! As I've been doing this month, I went through and updated some of the tracks with newer rips and higher bitrates, as well as substituting stereo copies where I might have originally used mono versions. It's still the same listening experience, but maybe it sounds a little better now. There's a text file in the download that tells you what I changed. Looking at the tracklist, it was another good year, with lots of great songs that I can still recall being excited to find. I first shared this collection during the Christmas season of 2011, but I'm bringing it back now, almost eleven years later. Enjoy!

 Still adding to your Christmas collection, here's part eight!

1. Snow by Harpers Bizarre from Anything Goes (Warner Bros WS 1716, Stereo, 1967). I didn't know until recently that there was another vintage version of this Randy Newman classic out there. Thanks to Discogs, I know now.

2. Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year by Dennis Farnon And His Orchestra from Caution! Men Swinging (RCA Victor LSP-1495, Stereo, 1958). Classic goodness from the mother label.

3. Fum, Fum, Fum by The Calvin Handbell Ringers-Robert Ivey, Director from the LP Joyful Bells (Omnisound N-1014 (from The First Presbyterian Church, Red Bank, New Jersey), Stereo, 1977). This is actually one of the earliest Christmas carols I can remember. We had it on some budget labels collection, so I didn't know it was something that other people didn't know. I think it's from Spain originally.

4. I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm by Bobby Troup from The Distinctive Style Of Bobby Troup (Bethlehem BCP-35, Mono, 1955). I first saw a record with this song maybe 15 years ago in a rather expensive record store. I wanted it, but wasn't going to pay their prices for just the one song. Discogs to the rescue. You can find more Bobby Troup at my friend Buster's other blog, the one that few people seem to know about or at least acknowledge.

5. Moonlight In Vermont by Willie Rodriguez With Chuck Sagle And His Orchestra from the album Anyone Can Play Bongos (Epic BN 583, Stereo, 1960). Wow, bongos!

And everything else in the pile today is production music...

6. Gifts Of Love From Far And Near-Vocal from The Great Christmas And Special Events Production Library-Disc 7 (Airforce Broadcast Services Disc 7, Stereo, 1984)

Christmas In July 2022-Part 7

We're moving on now, up to part seven already. Still got a ways to go, though, so be sure to keep checking back for more. In the meantime, here's the next batch of Christmas music from non-Christmas albums for you.

1. Jeg Er Saa Glad (I Am So Glad) by St. Olaf Choir-Kenneth Jennings, Director from the album Sing For Joy (St. Olaf Records E-269, Stereo). One of the most recent things I've recorded this month, I just finished this one up Sunday morning. In fact, I think there are only a couple more songs I need to record, unless I happen to find something else. I was prepared this year.

2. On This Day Unto Us A Child Is Born (Ps. 98) by University Of Miami Concert Choir Under The Direction Of Donald Oglesby, Ricky Hardy-Organist, Pianist, Soloist-Skip Sanders, from the LP Alleluia-Sing With New Songs (World Library Publications 7912 (Side 2: Christmas), Stereo, 1981). Like the last LP, this one featured a whole side of Christmas music. That makes the volume of stuff I'm sharing look bigger than it really is. But it's still good stuff.

3. Winter Blues Bossa Nova by Bent Fabric from his LP Operation Lovebirds (Atco SD 33-202, Stereo, 1967). A rerun, I think, but now in stereo.

4. Snowin' In Brooklyn by Ferron from Shadows On A Dime (Penknife/Lucy/Redwood LR004, Stereo, 1984). No idea who this is, but I do remember the day I found it at a Goodwill store in St. Pete. There were three random records in a row, all with a song I could use during Christmas in July. Not sure how that happens, but it's nice when it does.

And now the rest of the tracks are production music for you. If that doesn't mean anything to you, these are short tracks designed to be used at a radio station as programming aides.
