Various and Sundry Artists

I think this is the first various artists record I've shared with you this season. And I chose it for a couple of reasons. First, it features two tracks by the previously highlighted Dick Leibert. He had an LP out on Westminster that I have been unable to find, and it predates all of the RCA ones that I shared with you earlier. Secondly, it has a track from the impossible-to-find Ferrante & Teicher LP Adventure In Carols. I'm sure you've grabbed that LP from any of a number of places on the internet, but I always like to have an original of something I like. Thirdly, there are several other interesting tracks on here, ranging from choral music to organ tracks to some Christmas bell ringing, and even a short narration by Sherlock Holmes himself, Basil Rathbone. So it's a pretty good, yet unknown LP. I think the only LP I own that has a track featured here is America's Children Sing Xmas Carols, and I need to record that one for you. But anyhow, I know you're itching to give it a listen, so here's A Christmas Sampler (Westminster WP S-2). What do you think?

  1. Basic Hip Digital Gold is offering a sensational MP3 compilation Christmas disc called "Holiday Favorites" ripped from generally clean vinyl. One of the 14 LPs, EPs and singles included in the collection is "Adventure (it's written in singular not plural form on the the LP cover) in Carols"--a record that strangely evokes and successfully mainstreams John Cage's experiments with prepared pianos. Just thought I would tell you because the compilation as a whole is worth owning and, short of a CD reissue, you're not likely to hear a better-sounding version of the Ferrante & Teicher album.

  2. Must say I am full of admiration for this ambitious blog. So many records, so much music.
Produced in such a short time (quicker than I get the time to listen, but there will be other years...)

  3. I kep meaning to buy that Digital Gold from Ford. There's stuff on there I've never even heard of. And I fixed the name of the F&T album. Gotta get these things right when I can...

  4. Ernie,

I don't know if you're still taking requests, but if you are, and you have the album, could you post Wayne King's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" which is posted--for streaming only--at Falalala in muddy lo-fi. Buy the Basic Hip collection. It's superb. The mastering of "A Ding Dong Dandy Christmas" is revelatory.

  5. I'm sure if you put a note up over at FaLaLaLaLa asking for someone to repost that Wayne King album, you'll have it within 24 hours. I think I may have that album, but I'm sure mine would never sound as good as the version The King made. He's great with audio.
