Torrents 2

Well, it's been a few days now, and I'm curious as to how folks are doing with the torrents.  I don't see them getting used a whole awful lot, but I think it's still early.  For those of you who don't know about torrents, they're a type of peer-to-peer sharing software, so you're basically downloading the share directly from me, or, in a best case scenario, from several other people who've downloaded it before you.  The more people share it, the less the load on any one person.  All you have to do is download the share and leave the client running for a while, the software handles the rest.  Some clients even stay open automatically in the background without you knowing it, so if you decide to try it, you need to pay attention to what you're doing.  If you'd like to try the torrent, give utorrent a try.  Just download it, install it, then click on one of the torrent links in a post.  But read the instructions!  There are lots of setting you can change, including how much bandwidth it uses, but you can screw things up pretty badly if you aren't careful.  I don't want to get blamed if you share out the root of your C: drive with the world.

  2. I used it when MediaFire flagged your Hugo Winterhalter post. Works great. Thanks for the posts.

  3. The torrent option is a great "CYA" way when Mediafire takes things down - love it! (And keep seeding those torrents y'all!)

  4. Hi Ernie -

I'm doing well with the Mediafire option, so please keep that going as long as it lasts...

    Thank you,

  6. The torrents are great!

But it is also nice to have the Mediafire option, even if they are a pain at times.

  7. The torrents are great! They've been fast and give me peace of mind in case I can't download right away. Thanks again for the wonderful music! The glass instrument is already a classic in my book.

  8. I love having the torrents, because they're not susceptible to the kinds of shenanigans that can bring down these file hosting companies. In theory, torrenting can keep these shares going into eternity.

Here's the problem: They're working fine right now, when these posts are fresh, but what happens in March when someone comes by and wants to download an album. Will anyone still be seeding at that point?

  9. I love, and even prefer, the torrents. Mediafire is also an excellent option, though. Most of all, thank you for your ongoing generosity!

  12. the torrent for hugo winterhalter stayed up after the mediafire file went down. good to have options.

torrents are especially good for big files. if you do a compilation, you can throw everything into one torrent and voila.

please seed people. that's the way the system works. just keep your program open and your files up. (don't move or rename the files in your download folder. if you need to do something like that, copy them but leave the originals in the download folder so that others can continue to access them.

  13. I am happy you are doing the torrents. Thank you very much. Plus, I feel I am helping out by seeding the songs and allowing others to get some fantastic music.

  14. Torrents are fine with me. Will you be adding torrents to your older posts? Still trying to get the Christmas in July, days 21 and 32, that Mediafire has blocked access too. Thanks.

  15. Kwork-No, I will not be adding torrents to old posts. And no, I will not be posting the days from Christmas in July that you missed. So please, please, stop asking.

  16. Thanks for your hard work. As an old curmudgeon, I don't really trust the idea of torrents, and have never had great luck with them.

  17. One drawback to the torrents is that I have no idea how popular a record is. I can't see how many times it's been downloaded. If there's a way to do that, someone needs to tell me. I can only see how many bytes it's moved, but once it's seeded a few times, that becomes a meaningless number.

  18. Ernie - The torrent tracker may have a feature to tell you how many times the file has been downloaded. At least Demonoid and Pirate Bay had/have this feature. I prefer Mediafire for downloading small individual files and torrents for large groups of files, for instance episodes of OTR programs. Which ever you supply I will use and it is nice to have the option of one or the other. Thank you.

  19. You made me try the torrent for the 1st time out of curiosity for the Mills Bros 1949 Christmas 45rpm and I found it very easy to use. (Sure it will be useful somewhere else ?).
    Thanks!

  20. Ernie: Thank you for clarifying your position on older posts with dead links, and about adding torrents to them. I won't ask you directly again as requested.

This now goes out to our wonderful community as we revel in nostalgic and little heard Christmas music from times gone by. If anyone here was successful in downloading days 21 and 32 of the Christmas in July mega posts, would you please share links or torrents so that this great set can be once again complete? I would be truly grateful and appreciative of any help here. May everyone here be having a wonderful and Blessed Christmas season as we continue to prepare for the holidays with our friends and families and loved ones. All other days this summer were still available, it's only days 21 and 32 that are missing. Thanks again so very much.

  22. Torrents are terrific. Especially to remove the hits on MediaFire which has been increasingly hostile to this kind of blog downloading.
    Thanks

  23. I love the torrents--as long as folks are seeding, they're super-fast and no limits on the number of simultaneous downloads. (I'm seeding 14 of them right now and plan to leave them up indefinitely.)

MediaFire and the other sharing services are kind of a pain in the but because of all their limitations, but they're good for older stuff--at least until they take it down.
