New Oldies

Here's another one I was surprised to find not out on CD. This is the soundtrack record to a TV special from the 80's, Scrooge's Rock 'N Roll Christmas. Typical schmaltzy TV from the period, but at least you got Jack Elam as Scrooge. Now that's casting! Rounding out the cast were a bunch of individuals and groups from the oldies circuit, like The Association, Three Dog Night, Bobby Goldsboro, Paul Revere And The Raiders, Dean Torrance (you know, from Jan & Dean) and everybody's favorite Beach Boy, Mike Love. With a cast like that, how can you go wrong? Well, for one thing, too many synths and not enough instruments. But I suppose it's not that bad. I've enjoyed some of the tracks when they've popped up at random, but I can say that about just about every record I've ever recorded. So judge for yourself by downloading Christmas Party (Hitbound Records for Radio Shack, 51-3010, 1983). Oh, for the search engines, the other artists on this record are Mary MacGregor, Merilee Rush and someone named Ensemble.

  1. As a collector of versions of Jingle Bells (it's my goal to someday create an ENJOYABLE mix entirely dedicated to Jingle Bells), that may be the worst version I've ever heard. Yikes!

For the record, two of my favorite versions: Danny Kaye (which I think you posted last year) and the Statler Brothers.

  2. Ahh, the Statler Brothers. When I was little, I had an old Atari 400 computer. I had the fancy cassette tape drive to save and load programs from. I was so proud of myself when I wrote a program that not only loaded from a tape, but then played the tape through the computer. And what song did it play? The Statler Brothers version of Jingle Bells!

  3. I know this post is YEARS old but I had to tell you THANK YOU for helping me find the name of this album!! :) I was 12 when it came out and my folks bought it and then we moved away from family. The silly 'ah ha' at the beginning of Jingle Bells always reminds me of the first trip 'back home' for Christmas...it's a good memory!

  4. Don't know if you're even still blogging, but THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS POST. I'm digitizing this album from an old cassette tape my dad made of it. This is the soundtrack to the best Christmases of my life. Dad's gone now, but finding this brings him back a little.

  5. Hi, Ernie! Hope things have settled down to a dull roar for you and your family. Our prayers are with you. Maybe next year, you could re upload this one? I just recently discovered it's existence. Merry Christmas from Detroit!

  6. Is this album still available? The link is broken (and yes I realize I’m quite late to the party here, no pun intended).

  7. Whew, that is an oldie! Here's a new link, but I need to remaster this one, I think. Maybe this Christmas...

    1. Wow! That was quick! Thanks! I host a podcast all about Christmas in the ‘80s, and I’m hoping to cover this (quite bizarre) special and music! Thanks again!
