Baby Blues
Another rerun from last year, this is a great little LP that was a giveaway back in 1972. You can go to my post last year to read more about it if you'd like. But first, go download Gary Mann-Blues For Baby Jesus (The Educator & Executive Insurance Companies EE-101, 1972). I've also got a second cover for this one, in case you want to see what Gary Mann actually looked like. And be sure to read the back cover once you get it downloaded. Lots of history there about Mr. Mann.
I pulled this one from you last year, and it was pretty enjoyable. I'd consider buying it on CD.
ReplyDeleteBeing a trumpet player myself, the title track to this one is awesome! This download has been on my computer the whole year!

If you like obscure Christmas music, you've gotta get this one. The album is uplifting, morose, joyous... and often at the same time. My favorite track is "Alone at Christmastime." Gary Mann's trumpet bleats the lonely melody beautifully like a sheep in heat, a tasteful organ backs him up, and the lyrics are a real downer, but it's a good reminder that not everyone is surrounded by friends or family at Christmas.
ReplyDeleteLike a sheep in heat? That's the first time I've heard that phrase here at the blog...
ReplyDeletei´m really impressed about the collection you´ve put together

When I was a little girl, my parents received this album for obtaining insurance. I must say, they were exclusive country music listeners. Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings etc. After one listen....this went on to be our favorite Christmas album of all time. Thank you thank you for making this available online. I recently bought the LP on Ebay and even bought a turn table in order to hear it again. What a wonderful sound! It is now a favorite of my own children..ages 4 and 11. Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteIt is so good to find this blog. A close family friend directed me to it recently. I too love this music! But, perhaps for a much more personal reason than anyone else. Gary Mann was my father, and I am the little 7-year-old boy in the photo on the album cover. The little girl is my sister Melissa. You can't imagine how good it is to know that our father's music lives on and that it has touched people.
ReplyDeleteAlways a pleasure to hear from the people who made these Christmas records, or the family members. It's always cool to learn that they actually used Gary's actual family on the cover. Thanks for the comment, and if he's still with us, say thanks to Mr. Mann for me.
