Season Opener

Time to get this season underway properly with the first Chirstmas share! I found this record at a used book store in Largo one afternoon when I was on my way home from dropping the wife off at the airport for a trip to NYC. It's rare I get to go there because they have thousands of cheap records and I can spend a lot of time going through them looking for hidden gems, meanwhile she's trying to stay occupied with nothing to do. So while she was headed out of town, I got to dig. And dig I did, finding this record with a gloriously misspelled Chirstmas right there on the front cover. It's a shame because I soon discovered this is a really good record and well worth anyone's time to give it a spin. Don't really know a thing about the artist, only that it's a local record that probably only got distributed at private shows or appearances, or maybe the majority of them got tossed because of that misspelling. If you can get past the laugh factor, please download and give a listen to Joanie Ryan-Waiting For Chirstmas (SIC) (No Label, No Number, Stereo, Unknown Year).

Update: I didn't even notice the use of a stock cover on this one. Click here to see plenty of uses of this same stock image, "Snowy Trees".

    1. It's good stuff, but the Chirstmas on the cover is just icing on the cake.

  2. The ninth and tenth songs on this record are on my "I'll burst my eardrums before I listen to that!" list. I never could stand the Carpenters and that Lennon song should have died with him. YMMV

    1. Those songs got their chance over 55 years ago. That was enough.

    1. Put it on random play. In fact, but the whole collection this year on random play. There's always a surprise to be heard.

    1. If I could find a pile as good as this one, it would be an interesting year. :)

    1. Such things tend to jump out at me sometimes. It's a curse.

  8. Wow. For what is presumably a self-produced record, the singing and playing are terrific. What a find.

Ernie, I don't see this one on discogs. Do you ever enter records on discogs?

    1. I do, but only when I have the time, which makes it rare. Thus one does need to be added over there though.

    2. I'm willing to add it using the images in your MEGA file, if you approve.

    3. Yeah, that's fine. I'm sure you'll find dozens more as the season rolls along. I just can't ever find the time. I do update a lot of images though if I find something missing a scan that I've got handy.

    4. Done! I titled it per the record labels and not the cover (with typo).

    5. I really wanted to make fun of it for that typo, but it was just too good. I hope she sold a few of these.

  9. For many years the church down the street from where I live when I'm in Singapore had a sign with a long thing about their wonderful lord which closed with "He is JESUS CHIRST!"

  10. Ernie, you mention this was found at a store in Largo. By any chance is it that HUGE used book store just west of 66th Street on Ulmerton Road? I have yet to stop in there because of the fear of bringing MORE and MORE LPs back into the house!

    1. Yeah, Book Rescuers. I was in the on Black Friday digging again for the first time since I was in there to find this one. I was a little disappointed in the lack of turnover since then, but I still came away with a couple of things. I also pulled every Christmas record I came across and put it in their box of Christmas records, nearly tripling what they had set aside for the holiday. :) Good selection of dollar Christmas CDs, too. Can't beat their prices.

    2. Good selection, but I fumigated them before I added them to the collection. :(
