01-Jingle Bell Hustle-33 RPM
Thus far this season has been a tribute to the humble 7" 45 RPM single, an invention of RCA in 1949 to counter the creation of the 12" 33 RPM LP record by Columbia in 1948. In a neat turn of events, Columbia soon began to issue 7" 33 RPM singles using the same small hole as found on their LPs. This format never caught on the same way the 45 RPM did, but there are still plenty of them out there as they allowed slightly more music to be squeezed into the 7" confines of the vinyl. As I went through all my 7" records I went ahead and ripped many of the 33 RPM versions, and this is the first fruit of that labor. All 33 songs here came from a 7" 33 RPM piece of vinyl in my collection. As I have far fewer of them I wasn't able to theme them and I was forced to repeat artists and songs in the same collection, so the variety isn't quite as great as my other collections, but I'm sure you'll still enjoy them. Note that many of these records are EPs more so than singles, but there are still plenty of them with only a single track on each side. And the Wayne Newton song I've named the collection after is a longer version that the one I shared elsewhere this season, just in case you thought I was repeating myself. :)

I never would have thought there were so many of such things. The only ones I have seen are the original Columbia 33 singles and the Dinah Shore promo.
ReplyDeleteI like that you led with what I will assume is a Wayne Newton disco record.
Well, they're not all that old, but there are plenty of them out there. And I think that's the most disco song on that record, the rest of them are much more sedate. :)
DeleteI love the radio show demo records here, found both of those fairly recently. I suppose they're the predecessor of the Christmas podcasts that are all over the place these days, but likely new and interesting content in their day.
I don't know if I've ever thanked you for your hard work sharing these records. Some of the Christmas albums you have unearthed have become favorites of mine and brought me great pleasure in listening to them every year. Without you, I am sure many of these obscure records would be lost to time and I and many others would never have heard them.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I do it, to rescue some of this obscure stuff from the dustbin of history. Lots of people enjoy the old music, but few people take the time and effort to spread the joy. That's my niche, I guess. :)
DeleteThat's the Dinah Shore record I mentioned in a previous comment! And I have the Arthur Godfrey on 45 with Marshmallow World as the flip side.
ReplyDeleteDinah and Arthur make a good pair, doncha think? :)
DeleteI wish you had the full Diamond P Christmas with specials instead of the aircheck demo. Oh well....always like to your stuff every july and december. I DL it all. I'll be posting one of the few christmas things I still haven't on the jetsam on the next couple of days.....N O M A jingles from the 1940s off transcription.
ReplyDeleteWell, don't forget, there are two full episodes in the archives, and this demo tells us that there are at least two seasons of the show because they list all twelve artists, and they leave out one of the two records I do have. So it's good to have this. The other side will show up soon, and it's got bits of two shows on it. Oh, and the Burl Ives show appears to be cuts from his Christmas LP about the presidents, the educational edition, something else I've shared. Now, some links!
