02-It's Christmas Time
Day two of the Christmas sharity features 45 more songs from 45s. There's not too much of a theme here, at least not one that you'll be able to spot just yet. But things are not as they seem, just keep paying attention and all will become clear. (I see a track in here by The Keith Richards Orchestra. I don't think there's any relation there to Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones, but I should have thrown his version of Run Rudolph Run in here just to confuse the issue.)

ReplyDeleteHow did you surmise that "Little Klinker" was a Christmas record? Is this another one of Santa's multifarious helpers?
Yes, Klinker is the pup who woke Santa up. It helps if you have the picture sleeve in front of you, then you'd know who he was. :)
DeleteI guess it was a good idea to pick up another external drive for Black Friday. 90 songs already. Yowza!
ReplyDeleteLast external hard drive I bought only showed about 10% of the advertised capacity, so I sent it back to Seagate. They accused me of altering the drive and refused to warranty it or send it back without me covering the shipping. I should have just taken it back to Walmart. :(
DeleteHey Ernie, I missed looking at the blog yesterday… after supper, I spent 3 hrs digging out from another snow storm… I look forward to seeing what goodies you have in store for us. I actually listened to the well known Keith Richards singing Run Rudolph Run the other day. I have to work a 10 hr day, in snowy Grande Prairie, Alberta Canada…
ReplyDeleteYou got more snow than we did, I'm sure of that. :)
DeleteSo many great songs! Being a big fan of Jamaican music, I am very happy to see Byron Lee & The Dragonaires' "Everyday Is Like A Holiday"- what a great version!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good one! I was really excited to find something that wasn't on his Christmas records, or at least I don't think it was on there. I should check that...
Delete"New" Dora Hall Christmas music! She does a great job singing Blue Christmas to a heavily Bert Kaempfert-inspired arrangement. She does a better job singing the lyrics here than on the flipside, which is probably on the setlist later this season. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention,.
ReplyDeletePretty sure I shared all the Dora Hall Christmas a few years ago, but I can't keep track any more. There's one track that I haven't found yet, but I'm not sure if it's Christmas or not. One of those titles that could go either way... She hired the best arrangers, if only she could sing better...
Deleteif not her, then for sure it was her hubby Leo Hulseman, the founder of the Solo Cup Company, of which she was the heiress to. Are you sure you have heard this seasonal chesnut from her?

It's in the pile, wait and see. :)
DeleteExcellent Lou Monte Christmas song. Way better than "Dominick the Donkey" and less annoying too. BTW, the hard work you put into remastering these tunes paid off; terrific sound quality on the cuts I have sampled thus far.
ReplyDeleteLou has a double handful of good Christmas stuff, it's even been put out as an LP on at least one occasion. Sound quality is OK on most of the stuff, but I hear a lot of artifacts here and there. I do what I can with what I have. :)
DeleteThe Ferlin Husky song sounds like a Country rewrite of "I'll Be Home for Christmas." You did as best as you could to try to get decent sound quality out of the Frankie Lymon 45; It looks like your copy was pretty beat up. The Johnny Mann one was totally new to me and a lot better than some Children's Christmas records that I have heard.
ReplyDeleteI've had some of these 45s for 30 years now, and I don't think you could find them at a reasonable price these days. So I'm happy to have what I have. Out of the thousand or so that I ripped this season, I think there was one that I couldn't get to play through in one way or another. Some of them took multiple tries and plenty of edits, but I eventually got something. And I found another copy recently of the one that wouldn't play. :)
DeleteGood for you!
DeleteGood Charles Brown selection; Hank Snow was decent but too Country for my taste. Good to have the Ames Brothers on here, even though the song is not usually one of my seasonal favorites from them.
ReplyDeleteI think I ripped a whole Ames Brothers LP from the 45 set. Did that a few times just to get my numbers up a bit. Still music from a small record at the right rotation, but a technicality. :)
DeleteCary Grant's "Christmas Lullaby" is one of my all time favorite songs. It's perfect.
ReplyDeleteIt's great! Not a lot of folks know about the single with the sorta new year's b-side. That'll show up eventually.
DeleteHi Ernie,
ReplyDeleteAs a Bicentennial year baby, 28, 12, 1976, it was interesting to hear this song, Beverly Colomb-Red, White and Blue Christmas. Too patriot I think, but then Charo came on during this playlist and that was pure joy.
I remember in college I stumbled across a Charo record in the stacks that was on pink vinyl. This was back in the day when they didn't issue every record in a whole rainbow of hues, so finding colored vinyl was a real treat. I played her theme from the Love Boat quite a few times. Having a Christmas song from her is icing on that cake!
DeleteHi Ernie,
ReplyDeleteThis newer remix is really cool, but you have to like the song and Charo I guess.
On YouTube...
Charo (Mamacita) Donde Esta Santa Claus? (Kike Summer La Navidad Mix) (2022)
While I can appreciate new artists paying tribute to what came before, I frequently find that these updates are just a temporary flash in the pan. I'll always return to the original after just a couple of listens. :)
DeleteHi Ernie,
ReplyDeleteWell, my favorite this year is George Rock Sextet-Vocal By George Rock-I Should Have Left The Light On (For Santa Claus Last Night) from your collection number 2. Maybe there was something from your collection number 1, but I do not have the time to revisit that one. Tomorrow I will start to listen to your collection number 3. Hopefully I will find another gem in that one for my favorites list.
I was thinking...did you make a collection of just stories? That then would be my standout favorite of all.
Again thanks...
I think you need to get busy or your gonna run out of days. And I think you'll find day three is the all-story day you're looking for. :)
Delete0h...
ReplyDeleteI like it because it reminds me of Spike Jones. I am sure it is in tribute to him.
George Rock was the vocalist on many of Spike Jones' tracks that sounded like a little kid singing, which is just about all his Christmas songs. Not sure when George left the Spike Jones conglomeration, but I guess he wanted back in the Christmas song game as some point.
DeleteHi Ernie,
ReplyDeleteThat is interesting to know. I was shopping for a nutcracker to add to my collection, pity they are hard to find here in Berlin, when this song started playing. I thought it was Spike Jones' group, but it was not. Anyway, I am glad you featured it.
Assuming you mean a decorative nutcracker figurine, I don't know where I'd go to get one. If you just wanted a tool to crack some nuts, I'd go to WalMart. :)
DeleteHi Ernie,
DeleteI meant a decorative Nutcracker. Before Covid, was the last time I bought one. I guess people no longer really care for them, a shame really.
I had to laugh...
Walmart did have a store here in Berlin, Germany. It closed. I heard because Germany had or has strong Unions. If you want to do business here, you have Unions to deal with. At one time it was, I was told quite impossible to get fired. Now, I believe it has changed. On, the other hand, shops here are looking for employees left and right. It is a pity, the way society is today. Everyone seems to go the internet route for employment, if you get my drift.
Education meant a great deal to my parents, collage and university. They set it up, so I had funds available to go to both. My father past away just before I turn 13. My mother past away just after I turned 15. She missed my father very much. But, I aced college and university for them, and for me. So I know they are very proud of this fact looking down on me.
I was raised to have a work ethics.
oh,
ReplyDeletehad to locate this mp3 release of the Spike Jones 1956 album, Let's Sing a Song of Christmas on my hard drive. lovely album. nice to listen it as I decorate a 2nd Christmas tree.
Because you are so special to me and others, I will mail you out a 3D Christmas card today. You and Meredith deserve as many Christmas cards and greetings as possible.
I cannot wait to see your tracking of where all the cards you receive come from. I hope this year, you get more international cards...
I haven't put out the call for Christmas cards this year, though I've already gotten a few in the mail. I don't want to bother people, and trying to take it a little easier this year. We appreciate what we get though, thanks!
