03-Why There Is Christmas
In addition to being a tribute to the Christmas single, I wanted the shares this year to feel like a Christmas comp every day. It's a tradition that's nearly extinct, but I still enjoy getting a collection of Christmas songs from a friend that features all their favorites. The best collections to me are the ones that feature a batch of great songs that you've never heard before, and that's how I hope you view these daily collections. I didn't go to the effort of sequencing all the tracks, or even renumbering them into a specific order, but the thought is there. Is there a theme today? Yes, I think there is! All of the tracks here are spoken word bits and to be honest, some of them are pretty depressing. There are probably too many versions of Twas The Night Before Christmas here, as well as the biblical story of Christmas, but I had to work with the records I had. You might not listen to this collection more than once, but there's some good stuff in there. (It's day three and Blogger is already giving me a hard time about uploading all these image files. It's going to be a long season...)

Update-There were a couple of really long filenames in the original download that were causing some unzipping issues. I've updated to download file, so if you were having trouble, give it another try.
Blogger issues! Welcome to Lee's world! So glad you included the Rob Townsend and Scot Lad Singers selection here; It's one of my favorite recordings of the Christmas story in the Bible; the closest that sacred text ever came to sounding like a hit single.
ReplyDeleteThat Scott Lad is a weird one. It seems to have been issued a dozen or more times with a different business name on it. Seems you could buy a pressing with your name on it and use it as advertising. Probably given away with a few groceries or something. Not too common for having been given away though. Check out the discogs entry for it.
DeleteI told you last year that my copy was a giveaway from the small town supermarket that was in the town where my mother grew-up; It had another store in a neighboring town, but the one from the store in the town where my Nana lived was active into the mid-'90's.
DeleteI like how you are including the stars' Christmas greetings in these amazing compilations.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to see that I once engaged the producer of the Everett McKinley Dirksen record as a speech coach. (Old Arch - and he was old when I knew him - had an interesting career.)
I thought that was a way to make the collections a little more interesting, and I had to record that many fewer records. Awesome that you have a connection to the Senator and his record. One of the times I visited DC, I kept walking past the Dirksen Building and took me a while to make the connection.
DeleteOh, I remember when the records came out. Dirksen was quite a character.
DeleteErnie,
ReplyDeleteAppreciate all your hard work, even thus far, but, I'm having playing/extraction issues. Seems that the file name/path is too long, or something. The extraction goes to cut twelve, then I keep getting this try again message. I've ran into this issue before (the name/path being too long) and I've been able to fix that by editing the folder name, but not so here. Any suggestions? I can't even play some of the files in the original folder, because it says Windows can't complete the extraction, same reason. I've attempted editing said file names in the original folder and that isn't even possible, found that out. HMMMM...

Looks like there were a few really long file names in that download. I struggled to rename them until I copied the whole folder to the root of E: so that the path was shorter. The new download should work better, but let me know. I can't promise it won't happen again this season. New software creates some pretty long filenames while the old stuff truncated things at like 20 characters or so. Live and learn...
DeleteThanks, Ernie, so far, it worky now. Some of these are really interesting. Re:, Henry, back home when I was a kid, an announcer on one of our local stations, played that at least once a year and I still find myself quoting the title, even after all these years LOL, good to have it on the hard drive now. Thanks, again, love and prayin'f or ya and early Merry Christmas!

TupeloBrian says thanks. it will take until next Christmas to listen to all these one at a time as Media Player breaks them up.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lot of music, but there's no real set way to listen to them. I've had most of them playing in the car for six months now. I'm always hearing something I don't remember and having to look and see what it is. :)
DeleteThanks for the interesting song by the influential 1960s politician Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen. I try to listen to my LP of Walter Brennan every year- mostly sad spoken-word songs, with the exception being the excellent "Henry Had a Merry Christmas".

I think sharing all these singles is a good way to draw some interest back to the albums they're from (in some cases at least). I have lots of the LPs in my collection, but it's hard to find time to listen to everything and stuff gets forgotten. :)
Deleteyeeesh, depressing is right....soooo many records about "please bring back my DEAD relative for Christmas" last thing I need to hear at this point in my life! 😔
ReplyDeleteYeah, they're a real Debbie Downer, especially when listened to in bulk. You could make a zombie horror movie if all those dead moms and dads actually came back from the dead. Gotta be careful what you wish for!
