01-Thanksgiving Day Parade
OK, let's get this party started. Here's the first share of the season. I've named each share after a song in the download, often with some relation to the theme of the collection. Certainly not all the records are linked to the theme, but I tried to find as many as I could that linked together somehow. (Some days I was able to theme the whole thing, but those are the exception to the rule.) If you've visited the blog at any time over the past twenty years on Thanksgiving, you've likely seen and heard the Thanksgiving Day Parade song. It's from a TV remake of Miracle On 34th Street and it isn't really too well known. I try to push it whenever I can, and it's showing up here again with a few other Thanksgiving Day and November tracks. I feel like sharing notes on many of the songs each day, but that's going to just be too much. As you can see there are 45 tracks here (in honor of them all being from 45s) and it will just take too long to talk about them all. Maybe I can drop some info in the comments from time to time. We'll see how it all shakes out.

Merry Christmas in November, Ernie! And I hope you are having a great Thanksgiving! Thanks for this share and for all those to come.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the note. Thanksgiving was good, though the four-day weekend disappeared in a blink.
DeleteMerry Thanksgiving Ernie! Off to a great start already. Can't wait to get these playing. Thanks as always
ReplyDelete- Steve in PA
Lots and lots more where these came from. Hope you enjoy the 45 party!
DeleteHe's back! Best time of year. Thanks for a great kickoff share.
ReplyDeleteWell, I try. :)
DeleteOnly 45 songs? Slacker. ( I kid, I kid)
ReplyDeleteI figured 45 was an appropriate number this season. I did have to cheat though and pull some old shares out of storage to get enough. Hope no one minds.
DeleteDear Ernie, I really love the selections of christmas songs you provide each year. I have put all songs of the last five years in one large playlist that I have on rotation since a week or two.
ReplyDeleteThe Earl Grant version of Silver Bells in todays post is a real jam for me.
Best regards from Cologne, Germany, admiral shackleton
Thanks for stopping by, Germany is a long way to travel, even on the WWW!
DeleteThanks Ernie for all those years with beautiful xmas tunes!!! Everytime it's like opening a christmas present.
ReplyDeleteThat's the idea! :) Thanks for the note.
DeleteThank you, Ernie. You must know how so many folks scattered around the world enjoy your labor over the summer and this time of year. Thank you, young man.
ReplyDeleteWell, it keeps me out of trouble most of the year. :)
DeleteHey, you posted 45 songs today! That must be some kind of record for you, so to speak.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back!
I liked the symmetry of 45 songs from 45's, now how many days can I keep this up???
DeleteWhoa, the Annick Aïrosa song is powerful and already one of my favorites. I need to learn more about her! Best I can determine so far is that she was a French classical guitarist from the 50s/60s. If anyone knows more, please post. Thanks, Ernie, for doing this annually, I know it's a lot of work!
ReplyDeleteThe Annick was actually a stand-alone share back in 2022. I'll eventually get all the tracks stuffed in here somewhere, but you can grab the whole this with the artwork back here: https://ernienotbert.blogspot.com/2022/12/christmas-all-over-place-part-433.html
DeleteAside from a little scratch, the Ed Sullivan cut sounds pretty good. I am still looking for a copy of the album where "Jingle Bells' is featured. Found that version on YouTube 5 years ago and is one of my favorites to play every Christmas season online.
ReplyDeleteThe Ed Sullivan LP is a tough one to find in the wild. I remember getting pretty excited about it when it finally turned up in the stacks one day. The 45s are likely even rarer, but somehow I have a couple in my boxes. Groovy stuff!
DeleteIt certainly is; two of my favorites from that album are "Good King Wencelas" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", plus a mid-tempo "Do You Hear What I Hear." The organ is very reminiscent of the one featured in the non-seasonal Sammy Kaye Decca albums arranged by Charles Albertine.
DeleteThe lyrical content on "November Snow" is kind of sappy, but the excellent production by Steve Barri saves it and makes it listenable. Probably one of the few Dunhill acts that did not have a major charting single.
ReplyDeleteCan't be as sappy as Christmas In November, but that seems to be a tradition with Christmas songs.
DeleteExcellent sound quality on the Johnny Mathis "Little Drummer Boy". Very different Mono mix for "We Need A Little Christmas"; I finally scored a Capitol Record Club pressing of Julius' You're Gonna Hear From Me album, where this album appears on, almost three months ago, so it will get some spins on my turntable this season.
ReplyDeleteI was a little disappointed with the sound from that Johnny Mathis single. The b-side of that is one of my all-time favorite finds!
DeleteGreat Richard Maltby cut! Classic 1950's Pop with just a touch of Jazz musical influences thrown in. Great to have Eydie in the mix; of course, it's a repost from 2022 and STILL not on YouTube two years later, yet still an excellent version to stand alongside Steve's version from 60 years ago.
ReplyDeleteThat Maltby is pretty rare, as is everything on that SESAC label. Couldn't go to the store and buy it, had to order it for your broadcast purposes.
DeleteExcellent unique interpretation of "Marshmallow World" with a great vocal from Ronnie Deauville, one of Buster's favorites. The arrangement really shows off Ray's Glenn Miller influence. Will be playing this one a lot during the season for sure.
ReplyDeleteHard to go wrong with that one, even for singers with no voice.
DeleteThanks. I'm ready to take the month long ride.
ReplyDeleteIt might get bumpy toward the middle, but it will always be interesting if you dig Christmas music. :)
DeleteAnother fantabulous start to the season! Despite some family health issues over the last few years I've tried to drop by for some festive cheer. You've never disappointed. Ernie, you have brought so much joy, smiles and remembrances of Christmas past over the years we could never repay you for your efforts. I think at this point we begin referring to you as St. Ernie! Have a great season sir, you deserve nothing but the best.
ReplyDeleteHigh praise indeed. Thanks for that, you're gonna make my head too big to fit through the door. :)
