08-Ladies Sing Christmas

A nice little selection of Christmas tunes for you today, all with lead vocals sung by female artists. Some people you've heard of before, but I'm sure there are ones here that you're unfamiliar with. Lots of great stuff here, one of my favorite collections so far this year.  Lemme know what your favorite track is down in the comments. I think I have a couple more similar collections coming up, so if you like this one, stay tuned for more! And I know I keep hammering away at this, but I want to make sure you know I'm not taking credit for these shares.  All the raw rips for these records came from The Internet Archive, and their Great 78 Project.  There is so much awesome stuff there, go check them out when you get a chance.

  1. Whoops, I seem to have screwed up here. Fran Devino is a guy, not a girl. I wasn't listening to my selections closely enough. Sorry...

  2. What a great set, not heard of the Jimmy Wibler and the little band but that is a good one. The rest are all wonderful as usual kind sir, and who knows, perhaps Fran is a girl after all, one never knows these days....

  8. The song "Christmas In My Heart" that's labelled June Winters also appears on a Jasmine release "The Sounds of Christmas: Rare Holiday Jems" but listed as Fran Allison. I don't know anything about either artist (or Jasmine as a label) to know which is correct but the songs sound identical right down to the phrasing.

  9. I hope I didn't screw that up. I have both versions. Here's a link to the Fran Allison version at The Internet Archive:

    And the June Winters:

It's possible I tagged the share wrong, but I don't see how...

  10. OK, a quick download and check tell me that the Fran Allison version is about 10 seconds shorter than the June Winters version. So they aren't the same recording with a different name, they're just very similar arrangements by very similar singers.

And I believe Fran Allison is the Fran in Kukla, Fran And Ollie, so you may know who that is. :)

  11. Kukla, Fran and Ollie was my favorite show as a young sprout. Have you ever posted their Christmas album? I have it; maybe I should bring it out for a spin.

  12. Buster, yes you should! And I believe it's a 10" record, though I've never seen it in person. :)

  13. I listened a handful more times and you're right. They are different singers but very similiar. Whichever came second really seemed to match the phrasing in spots. I know Kukla, Fran and Ollie but I'm not sure I ever knew Fran's last name. Sorry for any trouble I caused.

  14. They are very similar, even the orchestration is the same. I suspect they were copying the same demo recording. Whoever wrote it shopped it around well. :)
