Vincent (Not George)

This is my version of one of my favorite shares ever over at The Christmas Yuleblog. And since The Captain has pretty much called it quits over there (though he could still surprise us), I'm going to go ahead and share out my copy of this great album with you.  This album has a little bit of everything in it's 21 songs, from reverent carols to quirky 50's pop, old favorites to tunes found only here.  There's truly something for everyone in the grooves here.  Even the cover is a kitsch classic, from the color TV (which gets a credit on the back sleeve!) to the creepy Santa, even the then-fancy chair.  There's just so much to love about this record, but so few people have seen or heard it.  So be sure you don't delay, go now and download Vincent Lopez And His Orchestra-Christmas Music (Coral CRL 57189, Mono, 1957).

This record was later reissued on Vocalion in a much abridged version with a crappy cover. Buy this version if you must, but try to find the real thing.

  1. Your expertly refurbished versions of the Vincent Lopez and Wayne King albums are among the biggest downloading joys of 2012. Now will you please refurbish my all-time favorite Christmas album, "Winter Wonderland," by the Ray Charles Singers.

  2. You know, I am one of the folks who haven't heard this one. Thanks, pal!

That cover could possibly have been designed by Alex Steinweiss, who was working for Decca then. This has the weird look of some of his other covers at the time.

  3. You must have looked on my Amazon.com search history last night because I was looking this up to see if I could find it to buy...Ernie, you're amazing. And, if you have a copy, I, along with (I'm sure) your blog visitors would really love a copy of Frank DeVol "The Old Sweet Songs Of Christmas." Thanks again for a great post!

  5. Okay, totally forgot about this cover from when I saw it on the Captain's blog years ago...must own a real copy. It's a classic. Looking forward to hearing the lp, so thanks E!

And as a big Ray Charles Singers fan, especially of the Winter Wonderland album, I look forward to your sweet-sounding rip (even though I own it). And speaking of covers, the illustration of the couple is slightly-yet-awesomely awkward. Now I just need to find the other two seasons I'm missing...I also have Spring.

  6. Are you going to post the back cover? Your comment intrigued me

  7. The front and back covers of both records are in the download, as well as scans of the labels on the vinyl. I try to cover all the bases.

  8. Sweet, Ernie! I was going to post this, but ya beat me again. I only have the bo-ring reissue. Torrents were a brilliant idea too. Merry Christmas! - Ryan

  9. I see this has another one of Santa's less famous helpers, "Whistlin' Otto, the baby reindeer", who woke Santa up. Santa apparently slept soundly in the 50s. He was kind of a mess back then, if the records can be believed.

  10. You'll find Santa had more helpers than Liz Taylor had husbands. Probably a lot more!
