A Small Biggs

And now, a bit of organ music from a 10 inch record, one of just a handful I ripped this year. These little records are pretty few and far between, but in the first few years of the LP, no one knew what size would triumph.  Would it be the 12" or the 10" size, both spinning at 33 RPM, or would it be the 7" 45 RPM format pushed by RCA Victor?  Well, in the end, the MP3 digital format won, or maybe we're still not at the end, who knows?  But for now, a bit of music from a piece of vinyl 10 inches in diameter.  This is Richard Keys Biggs-An Organ Concert Of Carols (Columbia 10" 33 RPM CL 6076, Mono, 1949).

1. Adeste Fideles (Oh, Come All Ye Faithful)
2. The First Noel
3. It Came Upon The Midnight Clear
4. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
5. Silent Night, Holy Night
6. Angels We Have Heard
7. Joy To The World
8. Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming
9. O Holy Night
10. O Little Town Of Bethlehem
11. Angels From The Realms Of Glory

  1. Thanks for the plug, pal!

I wonder what relation Richard Key Biggs was to the other organist, E. Power Biggs. Someone should invent the Internet so I could research that.

  4. Interesting note: This was the second ever Columbia Christmas 10" 33 rpm LP (the first was Christmas Songs By Sinatra, Columbia CL 6019, in 1948), and the only one the label released during the 1949 season.
