Chester Cheetah
Here's another record you can thank that big used book store up in Largo for. I spent 3-4 hours digging up there in the offseason and still came away with a large handful of good Christmas records. I feel like this is the last one though. There were a lot of similar records, probably part of a series, but this was the only one that was all Christmas. These demo records were used to sell sheet music but I think they often have interesting songs on them that you aren't liable to hear elsewhere. This one also has full versions of the songs, so you don't just get a thirty or sixty second sample of the song, you get the whole thing (though some of them are just short songs period). If any of that sounds interesting, and if there's anyone still reading this so far after Christmas, please be my guest and download West Chester State College Sinfonietta, Constantine John-Conductor-Christmas Orchestra Folio (Crest Records BEL112169, Stereo).

This would seem to be from West Chester State College (now University), a bit west of Philadelphia.
ReplyDeleteI think the band here is just kind of incidental, it was whoever the publishers could get for cheap to play their arrangements. But I was happy there was a credit at all, many of these demo things aren't credited.
DeleteThanks for a wonderful season of sharing!!!! ❤️
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure! Don't leave just yet, I'm still going. You'll have a stash ready to go next season.
DeleteHi Ernie,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds interesting as they all do. Sometimes I find something that is not up my alley as my dad would say.
Anyway, getting close, about a dozen plus single abums to go before I have finish the ones I have collected.
I then have all the Longines, Kids Stuff, Salvation Army, and Military-Service album collections (I collected all of the Military-Service albums I could find from the past years, these never interested me until I listened to the Jack Jones one from last year.) and a few odds and ends. So all told, another approximately 85 albums or so to listen to.
Wow, what a lot of good listening.
I think I'm close to having shared 300 albums this season, if not a little over, so you're more than 2/3 there. :)
DeleteWell, this ended my current queue of albums. Now onto your latest shares:-), and the 80 or so in collections as stated above to listen too.
DeleteThis one jumps right into my favorites group, without a doubt, it is straight up my alley.
I feel like you still have a long way to go. How long is the snow supposed to last?
DeleteThe snow has come and gone within a week. We might get some more next week and in February too. We will see.
DeleteThis is interesting, in that for sure, Ernie. Thank you, and I look forward to what you still have to share, for this year season. As per usual, our house is still decorated, and we are having friends over for an "after Christmas 'Dinner'", the end of January :)
ReplyDeleteJust remember, it's always Christmas in your heart!
DeleteI'm still here and reading and this sounds extremely interesting to me - you don't see "Christopher, The Christmas Tree" on a track list very often!
ReplyDeleteWell, that may be the highlight. There's always Jiminie if you want more Christmas tree music.

Another interesting and one-of-a-kind share, thanks Ernie!
ReplyDeleteLook like this was released in 1960.

Nice catch, assuming this record was made the same year as the sheet music. Hard to say for sure though.
DeleteAnd if 1960 is correct, wow—this is an expensive way to market Merle J. Isaac's arrangements of these traditional carols. But nevertheless, here we are. This stuff happened.
ReplyDeleteErnie, I hope you realize that without your LP rips and your blog, recordings (and interpretations) such as this might be lost forever. Which would be a shame in this case, because this is lively Christmas music!
If Christmas albums 1946-1966 have taught us anything, it's that Christmas songs can be brought to life in infinitely new ways via different arrangements—and this LP is no exception.
Well, they had to market the arrangements somehow, and being able to hear a performance was the best way to do it I doubt if they paid the performers much, other than maybe free copies of the sheet music and they certainly didn't get any kind of royalties for the performance. I don't remember if I mentioned it or not, but the store had a whole series of similar albums, I just grabbed this full Christmas one and a few that had individual tracks that I shared out during Christmas In July.
