CiJ 2025-Day 6

Speeding through the month of July with a wee bit of Christmas music, that's us. I just hope you're able to keep up! Today's highlight is a seasonal (season as in winter, not season as in Christmas) jazz workout from JJ Johnson that I thought was pretty neat. My copy was a UK issue, but I'm sure this came out in the States as well. I find a lot of odd records in my searches, so something from a foreign country is hardly out of the ordinary. I also notice that I didn't remove the price stickers from many of my records. At this point, those stickers have likely been on some of the sleeves so long they won't come off without taking the underlying image with them. That's why I have to do a lot of Photoshop (actually GIMP these days) on the record covers I share in December, there's always something that needs touched up. Hope you're having a blast so far, much more to come!

  1. I always like Christmas/Seasonal jazz. The style of that first cover you posted just screams 80's. I don't recall how far into the 90's that aesthetic continued.

    1. That 80's aesthetic was the logical endpoint of the whole Miami Vice look. :)

  2. Thank you Ernie for another great volume in the outstanding collection of the Christmas in July series!

  3. My go-to method for removing a sticker years ago was to heat it up with a hair dryer, then remove any residue with lighter fluid. But I seldom remove stickers any more. I just clone 'em out digitally.

    1. Yeah, if the sticker isn't covering something I can't clone, I just fix it in post. Then I wonder why post processing takes so long...

  5. @keek - That style (bright colors, geometric shapes, brush strokes, drop shadows) is called Memphis Group, which has nothing to do with the cities of Egypt nor Tennessee. It's an Italian design firm that popularized it.

I only found out the name recently myself. I'd seen it referred to as Nickelodeon-style, Degrassi-style, and Saved-By-The-Bell-style.

    1. On a related note, I recently read about the 'Jazz' design that is of a similar era and aesthetic: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz_(design)&ved=2ahUKEwjfqaqJ1KqOAxUCRDABHYwDDIgQFnoECB4QAQ&usg=AOvVaw1MpGleSwQDJud-b4yLSg5h

  6. Looking forward to listening to the JJ Johnson selection. I used to take the price stickers off of the albums I bought until one of my friends who is on the Songs of the '50's and '60's Facebook groups shared pictures of his albums with me and noticed he kept the price stickers on his, which now causes me to do the same when I add a new record in the collection (I do take them off whenever I purge some I don't want or like and send them off to the nearest thrift store.)

    1. For a long time, I was buying so many thrift store records that I couldn't possibly have gotten all the tags off without staying home from work all day. Thankfully those days are over. Always neat to see 10-15 year old price tags though. Oldest I've found recently was '88, but I think that tag predated my buying it.

  7. Excellent JJ Johnson selection; a delectable slice of Pop-flavored Jazz. Will most definitely be on the lookout for that album in my record hunts. Good sound from your Import pressing.
