Christmas In The Time Of Covid 19, Part 9

Whew, Saturday is finally here. I was beginning to think I wouldn't make it.  I worked more hours this week than I have in a long, long while. I'm having to come in before everyone else to monitor temperatures as everyone else arrives, then I have to stay late to shut everything down. And on top of all that, we switched software, so I have to learn all the new stuff and make sure everything works.  Hopefully next week will be easier in that regard, but I'm still happy to be working and able to pay the bills, I know a lot of people aren't so lucky.  You just need a small injection of Christmas music to ease the pains of Covid quarantine and stay-at-home orders.  So today I've got a small record that was issued in 1968 to customers of an Indiana-based electric co-op.  According to this website, this was part of a series that went through the second half of the sixties and right into 1970. (There are also links there to listen to Youtube versions of each release, so that's nice.) This sort of reminded me of the Line Material Christmas records, though not nearly so elaborate or well-produced.  Still well worth a listen, and I wish I had the whole set.  This is Jack Underwood-1968 REMC Christmas Record-A Delightful Story Of A Boy And Girl On Christmas Eve (No Label 7" 45 RPM 855C-6092, Mono, 1968).

  1. Just in case that's not enough for you, how about three different versions of Christmas In Killarney, two of which happen to be from Denmark (and both of them have White Christmas on the flipside)? Some sort of weird coincidence? Perhaps. But there's lots of great music here, all courtesy of the fine folks at archive.org and their amazing collection of rips from 78 RPM records, remastered a little bit by me.

  3. Funny, just before calling it a night I thought, I'll bet Ernie is doing some kind of "Covid Christmas" posting. Sure enough, you don't disappoint. Thank you for thinking of a little thing like this to cheer your fans up. Stay well, get your rest. Sounds very tiring and stressful. Of course, that's just called "life on planet Earth" these days! Stay well everyone!

  5. Ahh, you beat me to 'em, and I forgot all about it. Sorry. But maybe this is one you don't have? :)

  6. It is. Thanks! For a moment, I thought it was the slow-moving Randy and Ellen saga I've been posting, but mine is 1966, and it has the elves (in sped-up style) singing the REMC jingle. Yeah, these have a bit of the Line Material style/edge, but more like the ones LM produced prior to landing John McCarthy. And I'll bet none of McCarthy's 2009 obits mention LM! Since the McCarthy LM's ceased in 1962, REMC filled an abandoned spot. Or whatever I just typed.

  7. Thank you for providing some much needed joy, fun and levity these past few days. both my wife and i are out of work and things seem a little dire right now, but spending my christmas visiting your site last year was a highlight of the season, so it's lovely to come back around and get these gifts! keep blowing the dust off those platters and giving us something to listen too!

  8. Hello, Ernie. Here we are some weeks past your last post and I'm hoping that you're okay. It's a complicated world out there. Some of us are being challenged in unforeseen and unprecedented ways.
Thankfully, both my wife and I remain well, and our respective families, so we're counting our blessings and hoping for the best.
I'm also hoping for the best on your behalf, Ernie, and very much looking forward to the next time we are gifted with your seemingly endless reservoir of seasonal fun and entertainment. Dude, you have done SO MUCH for my annual randomly rowdy holiday compilations, for which I am specifically thankful.
Be well, my friend, both you and all those close to you, which includes all of us out here who follow and appreciate you.

  9. Thanks for the notes. I'm doing fine, just working too many hours and not having much time to post. Plus I wasn't getting a ton of response, so that makes it hard to hold on to what scant little motivation I do have. :) Just not a lot of Christmas lovers stopping by the blog in spring time.

Stay safe out there, and if I don't do any more Covid posts, I'll certainly be back in July!
