An Ending Of Sorts

Well, that's it.  There is nothing more in the pile that I can share.  Everything else I recorded this year is for my own personal enjoyment and can't be shared because it's out there in the world for streaming or purchase somewhere. I frequently rip things that I know I could buy elsewhere, just to see if I like it before I spend any more money. Frequently I enjoy my vinyl rips enough that I don't have to spring for a $9.99 Amazon download. And sometimes my rips are better than those downloads. :) Anyhow, I didn't want to just ghost you all and disappear until July, so this post is my goodbye for the season, and a big thank you to everyone who visited, and especially those who left comments.  Really love to get the comments, and if I don't get comments on something, I feel like maybe I didn't say the right things about the music, but I know that's not really true.  The music has to stand on it's own. I think that all my shares, good music and bad, will eventually find their audience. I hope you had a great season, and thanks for letting me be a part of it. Now, tell me, did you find a favorite among all those downloads? And was there something you downloaded that you actually hated? :)

  1. Thank you, thank you!. I appreciate you. I've always been curious though, what do you play your rips on? I use the Music app on Mac, formerly iTunes. I notice that your tags are often incomplete. I go through them and complete them, such as genre, track number, artwork etc. I have to be honest that I don't download the 78s much anymore because I can't always discern the original track information and the related artwork, etc. I do use Discogs, of course.

All the best and happy new year!

  2. I create my rips on a really old out-of-date version of iTunes, and I meticulously tag everything. Artist, album, title, track number, writer if it's on the LP, I even put the label and catalog number into the comment field. You're not seeing that correctly? Very odd. I hope not everyone is having that problem. I occasionally play my rips on my work computer with Media Monkey, and the tags come through just fine. Weird. I'm going to have to switch my whole setup around soon, since I have to upgrade to Windows 10 and I'm not sure what's going to be compatible and what's not.

  3. It has been another pleasure to stop by nearly every single day for the past couple of months, Ernie. Thank you. Very much.

  5. Hey Erinie, it's been a holiday blast! I'll keep a link in the 'check occasionally' folder. The question is if I'll remember to check back this July. In any event, I'm obviously not alone in my appreciation of alll you time and efforts. Hope to see you again sometime.

  6. Why would we hate? Actually there are a number of us who love the 'bad' stuff because it's so untentionally funny! ;)

  7. I have to tell you, old pal, that the collection I enjoyed the most this year was my selection of favorite tracks from Christmas in July! Outstanding.

I also loved Chree-See-Mus and Santa Send Me. I was happy to see that Bill Doggett record, but it wasn't that good, sad to say! I love the Canteloube record, too, but I've posted that one myself.

Actually, you come up with so many nice things (organ 'n' chimes aside) that it's hard to keep track.

Hope we see you in July!

  8. Thanks for all your hard work each year, Ernie! I still haven't listened to most of it so I can't say what my favorite was, but I'll get caught up at some point. Just off the top of my head, I loved the stereo version of Jose Melis. The Bill Thomson album was fun, too (I think that's the one), mainly because my old music teacher had the same organ.

  9. There aren't enough thanks out there for all you do to present your vintage treasures, Ernie. As someone who really doesn't care for the slickly bland/cookie cutter contemporary offerings that mostly all that is released these days, i very much appreciate these forgotten offerings. I think my personal favorite this year was the Yamaha Christmas Presents lp....so Velveeta smooth!
    See you in July!

  10. Ernie,
You have been part of my Christmas season from the time I discovered your blog. Thank you so much. Christmas has been ever more meaningful because of your shared treasures. All the best. Merry Christmas.

  12. Sometimes in the song title field there is other information such as composer or soloist. That should go in the composer field or comments. In the case of 45s or 78s, there is often a lot of artwork in the folder, but not necessarily associated with each audio track or imbedded in the file. And sometimes the tracks from a bunch of singles is numbered 1-20, for example, rather than for each single. The genre is often labeled "oldies" rather than something more specific. Those are just a few things. Not a criticism, but but meant as help. Thank you again!

  13. Thanks for the feedback, but I think you're mixing my downloads up with someone else. I've seen those exact things happen in downloads I get from other folks, at least the mis-numbering of the tracks and the artwork not being linked to the MP3 files.

The numbering issue is because they are being ripped from an intermediate location (like a burned archive CD), which assigns them the number from the archive. It's been years since I've shared out a bunch of singles in a single batch, so I'm sure that wasn't me.

As for the title having other info in the field than the title, that's curious. Sounds like the software isn't properly parsing the header info. Whether that's something that can be fixed or not, I don't know. Might be a disconnect between the ID3 versions...

It's all very weird, but like I said, I think some of the issues you mentioned are from other blog downloads.

  14. Thanks so much for all the music, Ernie! It's rare that I don't enjoy something you've shared, and your fondnesses have rubbed off on me--I've developed an appreciation of a good organ and chime album, a promotional piece from a branch of the military, and a collection of carols from Slovenia or Norway or the Ukraine. : ) My favorites this year have been orchestral collections:

    - Jose Melis, His Piano & Strings-Christmas With Melis
    - The London Sound 70 Orchestra And Chorus-The Sounds Of Christmas
    - Ferrante & Teicher-Adventure In Carols

It makes me sad to think we won't hear from until Christmas in July. If you have moments of boredom between now and then, I'll note that I only discovered you about two years ago. There's soooooo much music you shared in the early years of the blog, and I always appreciate when you re-up an old favorite. AND I'm dying for you to re-up the 12 volumes of HI-FI living! But beggars can't be choosers. You're already so generous with your time and energy to share so much music. Know that all of us beggars are extremely grateful. You've enriched all of our lives with the gift of music that should not be forgotten or unheard.

    Many thanks!
    Ronnie

  15. Ah, the end of Christmas shares - always sad to see you shut it down but when I sit back and think of the hours and hours you put into this I am amazed that you share as long as you do - one big thank you from me to you and yours for keeping this alive - I've been sharing (subjecting) my younger generation to some of your shares and you know, I think some is sticking. Anyway, my favorites? might seem odd but the Philips 66 Tijuana - how absolutely campy and o so christmassy......

  16. Thanks for all of your posts, Ernie. They are appreciated more than you know! My favorite this past year was the Pittsburgh nurses. Utterly charming and well sequenced. See you next year!

  21. I have enough music from you from the past couple of years to still listen to to last about ten more Xmases- but I'll be damned if I don't keep wanting more.
Great job this year, as all the years previous.
    thanks much.

Thank you, Ernie, for sharing some of your collection with us again this season. Fun as always! I'd have to say that my favorite album this time around was the "Adventure in Carols".

  23. As always, a long and wonderful season here.
A question you may have answered before
but, where on earth do you store all that vinyl?
    I've always been curious.

    Thanks again,

  25. Your blog has been fabulous and a highlight of my holiday season!

I have found that every tag is accurate and that all the artwork transfers correctly into my iTunes, so all your meticulous effort has paid off for me in a big way.

As for favorites...wow, I'm not sure I can pick one or another, but I'll tell what I do every Xmas: I load an old 32 GB iPod with all holiday music and play it in my office as background from Turkey Day to New Year's Day...and what I love love LOVE is the huge VARIETY !!! I could probably go back and pick pone or two that really stood out, but the sheer diversity is what makes listening fun and festive. Thank you so much for the many years of great music sharing!

As for non-holiday music: HI-FI LIVING ! Hands down that's just a spectacular collection.

    Cheers!

  27. Ernie, loved the shares, as usual! Christmas isn't Christmas without Ernie!

So much good stuff, it's hard to pick. The organ albums are great!

  28. I have no problem with reading the tags in Winamp, my prefered player. All reads as should including track numbers. I do wonder if groovylounge is mixing blog downloads from around the web and not realizing it. Maybe some older players cut off part of the tags, but that's not your fault or problem. So far my screenreader hasn't found anything from you to be incomplete.
Thanks for all the Christmas celebrations this year and see you in July if you're able. I hope you experience for yourself all the joy you bring to us on a twice a year basis. Thank you.

  40. Thank you, Ernie. Always enjoy your posts and rips even though I don't always comment on every post I read or share that I download. Most of my Christmas library has come from you. You're also very knowledgeable about the recordings. Very entertaining and informative. It wouldn't be Christmas without you!

  41. It's a pity you decided that way, but we must find our happiness,by this way here or another format.
Just kindly asking you for a song of Werner Muller Orchestra - The Big Clown Ballons.

For me is the only song missing on my album to restore, it came jumping from the beggining and every 4 seconds of playing do a jump, ... A blind purchase at EBAY , never more!

To return the disc, 39 dollars
(I still live on Brazil, Santos City)

if this song is possible I would be very grateful to you.

Since now, a lot of hugs for you.
