Statue In The Sky

I mentioned this statue the other day when I posted a picture of a similar statue here. I went back to the Ringling Museum today to see if they had put it back up after taking it down for some new construction. Lo and behold, they had installed it in the center of the long drive leading up to the museum. Maybe now someone will know the name of it when I ask. Pretty cool color, too, thanks to the sun having just set.

  3. Ernie,
Is she called "Lady Victory?" We have a couple of Civil War statues here in Maine with a robed woman holding a laurel and they are refered to as the Lady of Victory.

In my hometown of Saco, Maine, our Civil War memorial has a kneeling soldier with Victory behind placing a laurel over his head. I think it's the only Civil war statue in the country with a feminine figure in it. I think all the others are of just a standing soldier.

Heh, I think a couple of towns have Confederate soldiers for a statue because local lore has it their order got mixed up at the factory!

  4. Rob-Took me a while to find it, but I knew that when I had shot the small statue, I had also shot the tag on the stand. (The bog version outside doesn't have any ID on it that I've ever seen...) Here's what it says:

    Victory
    Chiurazzi Foundry, Active in Naples
    Italian, 19th-early 20th century
    Bronze, 33 x 34 inches
Bequest of John Ringling, 1936, SN5346

So, there you have it. You were pretty close on the name. I don't know if I buy into the Civil War connection, though. Again, that's the info for the small one, but I'm sure the big one is similar.
