The Friendly Skies

Here's a new one for you, a Christmas album put out by an airline! Never seen such a thing, but now we'll see it together. This is Frohe Weihnachten (Lufthansa (Germany) F 667.599, Stereo). It's an interesting collection of Christmas music, including at least one track on the zither, one on a music box and whole lot of other things that make this an eclectic listen. Enjoy!

  1. Hi Ernie,
This will be interesting to hear. I know someone who is a cabin crew for this airline. He lives in Berlin, but travels all the way down to Frankfurt when he is scheduled to work. Crazy, but he loves to work on the international flights. The life of working is always interesting.

  2. Hi Ernie,
On the Discogs website for this album, listed under Notes they have this information, CGNLMZ 10/81. I knew this was the date, but?
Anyway, here is the explanation of its full meaning.
Release number and date of the record
The abbreviation CGNLMZ 10/81 on a vinyl LP cover refers to the release number and date of the record. Specifically, CGNLMZ is the company code, and 10/81 indicates the release year. This format is commonly used in the vinyl record collecting community to identify the year and company associated with the record.
The internet came to the rescue...

    1. I was just wondering...
Could this have been a inflight purchase on their international flights? Notice the different languages at the top of the Album cover.

    2. An interesting one - appears to have been produced by Electrola, EMI's branch in West Germany.

  3. Slightly off-topic, but, when I read the title of this post, I thought of Piedmont Airlines, which (if my memory is correct) was based (or maybe just flew out of a good bit) out of Piedmont Triad International (not really) Airport of Greensboro, NC, my old hometown. The airport may have had another name earlier (I seem to remember that much), but can't remember every bit of that. I said all that, to say this. Come fly the friendly skies, was their (the airline's) slogan. Got the folder, for the oddness thereof/with and I'm sure there's good music therein, too. Thanks, love and praying for y'all.

    1. Memory is a funny thing sometimes. Jingles from 50 years ago will just pop into your head for no good reason.

  4. What a lovely little album. Fits nicely into the Xmas around the world section of my Christmas collection!

    1. It's a nice collection of stuff, but the airline provenance is what I find the most interesting. That makes it very international. :)

  5. Oh cool! I think I saw a Southwest Airlines Christmas album on eBay a while ago but it was too rich for my blood.

    1. I didn't think SouthWest had been in business long enough to release any records, but I could be wrong.

  6. The cover is most likely Lech am Arlberg in Austria with the church St. Nikolas in the center. At least that is what my ChatGPT came up with.

Thanks for the share, I am a frequent flyer with Lufthansa.

    2. Well, I dunno. My search of that church shows a tower with an onion-shaped dome at the top. The church tower in the picture has a pointy top. Unless they've changed it over the years, but that seems unlikely.

    3. You seem to be right, the top of the church Looks different. I have to diffamiert Little deeper…

  7. It could be Warth am Arlberg in Austria.

    2. It's a tough match without a very similar vantage point. And day instead of night...
