Sorry, Vegas

There are lots of cool things to see in Las Vegas, but I'm afraid those ugly yellow fire trucks aren't one of them. Yellow? Come on, that's just crazy. You can do better than that!

  1. Ugly? I think not. High visibility is paramount.

  3. High visibility comes from warning lights. Yellow could be a construction vehicle or a school bus, so it does not help to identify fire apparatus.

  4. yellow is more visible in low light and after dark, especially when parked at a scene --- although that is one funky shade of yellow :\

  5. Several years ago some research was done to determine what colors are most visible to the human eye. The idea was to paint firetrucks this color to avoid accidents. The results revealed that a lime green or yellow was the most visible. Many departments began using these colors in the interest of safety. These colors are more visible at night as red turns black in low light conditions.

  6. OK, so yellow is more visible. So why hasn't the fire service changed from red lights to yellow lights? Because people associate red lights with fire trucks, not some construction vehicle. It's the lights that make the truck more visible and the newer lights are close to blinding!
