Congo Percussion

I wasn't sure what to make of this LP cover when I first picked it up. Looked neat, but a little bit stereotypical and racist at first glance. But it turns out to be actual African rhythms recorded by African Americans. Chief Bey And His Royal Household-Congo Percussion (Pirouette Records RFM 11) is what would be called World Music today, but it was 30 years or so ahead of it's time.

  1. My dad bought the original of this record in 1960. It has a different cover. Grew up listening to it. Good stuff. Years ago he gave me all of his albums and 10 years ago I had this one put on CD for him. My daughter has the album now. She loves it.

  3. well, it 2 years later...but if anyone reads this, there are several Congo Percussion's for sale on eBay. Nearly identical I believe. I'm trying to track down the original musicians on a recording one website says came from "Jungle Percussion". And another website claims the 'author' is "Chief Bey" as cited (however, at leat 4 other artists are cited in different incarnations of the same song clips.)
