Christmas In July 2023-Part 3

As it turns out, I have to work today. I thought I was going to get a four day weekend, but it just didn't work out that way. That's how it goes sometimes. But I've still got six good Christmas songs for you, working or not. Enjoy!

1. Sy Mann At The Lowrey-Winter Weather
2. The Shawnee Choir-Earl Willhoite, Director-Richard Lindroth, Accompanist, Violinist: Numa Snyder-Who Is This In Manger Sleeping?
3. David Rose And His Orchestra-June In January
4. Les Troubadours Du Roi Baudouin-Joachim Ngoi-Kimya
5. Women's Chorus-Berkeley Chamber Singers-Alden Gilchrist, Organ And Conductor-A Christmas Carol
6. Iroquois Junior Public School Primary & Senior Choirs, Choir Director-Shirley Munroe-Mary's Boy Child

See? Some good stuff in there, and not too many repeats. See you again tomorrow!

  1. Whatever happened to Lowrey organs? I used to live near a mall that had a Lowrey organ store. The proprietor would park himself outside the store and serenade passersby with songs. This was not quite as classy as the places with grand pianos, but we made do. Not sure if the organist programmed Christmas music, but I imagine he did.

    1. Yeah, I remember the guy playing in the mall when I was a kid. Seemed to be mostly preprogrammed if I recall. :)

  2. Didn't Sy Mann do that Moog seasonal record? Yep, https://www.discogs.com/release/574804-Sy-Mann-Switched-On-Santa.
I always enjoy the school choirs, the younger ones even more. Thanks for sharing, Ernie. Just a few days in and I'm already nabbing tracks for personal mixes.

    1. Yep, same guy. He had another Christmas organ record a few years earlier on a budget label. Glad you've found stuff worth keeping already. :)

  3. Great version of "June In January." For a moment, I thought it was on my volume of Songs of the Fabulous '30's, yet when I checked my copy, it wasn't on there. The strings, French horn, and the Liberace-esque piano really stand out on this selection.

    1. Yeah, it was originally issued as a double album, then later came out in a couple of volumes.

    2. Yes. I have Volume 2 in Mono, which has got a great orchestral version of "Body and Soul" on it. the double-LP set was reissued by MCA in the mid-1980's with different cover art.

  4. Unique version of "Winter Weather", I didn't even know that Sy Mann even cut solo records; I am more familiar with his session work. At times, his playing on this selection brings to mind Frank Scott's playing of the Vox Electronic electronic harpsichord on the late '60's Lawrence Welk albums.

    1. He has a full non-Moog Christmas LP that should show up here in a remastered form this coming Christmas season. Budget label stuff, but there's nothing wrong with that. :)
