Krog 2
As promised earlier today, here's a second LP I discovered in the collection that features Mr. Krogstad. I swear to you that I had no idea there was a relationship between this LP and the first one I shared when I pulled them out to record them, I only realized it later when I saw two file folders on my computer with similar names. I don't think Bob's name is on the outside of this one anywhere, I had to slit open the shrinkwrap that held the gatefold closed all these years. And there inside the the gatefold near Bob was a name I did recognize, Thurl Ravenscroft! Sure enough, Tony the Tiger did the narration on this LP. Color me surprised! Turns out this record was recorded under the auspices of The Crystal Cathedral, a large church building outside of LA (close to Disneyland!) that was associated with mega-pastor Robert Schuller and his Hour Of Power TV ministry (it's not a Catholic Church). Not sure if this was a giveaway in exchange for a donation or some other project designed as a fundraiser, but I'm glad it exists and that I found it at random one day in my collection. Give it a listen and see if you think it's G-G-G-G-G-G-G-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-E-A-T! This is Bob Krogstad, Conductor-Sheldon Disrud, Choral Conductor-Thurl Ravenscroft, Narrator-The Glory Of Christmas-A Living Nativity (The Crystal Cathedral RFJP-8101, Stereo, 1981).

Wow! Unexpected Thurl!
ReplyDeleteVery unexpected. :)
DeleteA real find!
ReplyDeleteI thought so. :)
DeleteI think that Crystal Cathedral church and Robert Schuller were the inspiration for the Firesign Theater's "Powerhouse Church of the Presumptuous Assumption"
ReplyDeleteThat could certainly be, but I feel there were a lot of TV preachers at the time, each doing something very similar that resulted in a lot of money in their own pocket. :(
DeleteErnie, I love this records, what I Call "Singing Christmas Tree" or Gospel Musicals - cantatas :)
ReplyDeleteI have one, with Ken Parker, "Heaven Rejoices" from 1981, by the Good Life Productions Label
Also, I have "A Season A Savior A Star" by Lanny Wolfe and Bob Krogstad by Benson Records, from 1997
I have a stack of Singing Christmas Tree records with actual pictures of the tree on the front cover. Someday I will work my way through them and share them as a series. But not anytime soon. :)
DeleteThank you. No problem about the wait :)
DeleteI believe you posted or someone did last year... I think I downloaded a few with actual albums like that :)
