Bottom Of The Rock 2

I guess I shouldn't have titled this post as having anything to do with 30 Rock since there's not a connection with that locale on this cover, but I think I'll allow it since our artist here is so connected to that iconic location. This is a stereo version of an LP I've been sharing with you since 2006. In all that time, I guess I just assumed I'd ripped and shared the stereo copy, but for the life of me I can't find it. I'm fixing that tonight, this is Dick Leibert-A Merry Wurlitzer Christmas (Westminster WST 15020, Stereo, 1959). I didn't do an A/B test here to see if the mono version was a mix-down of the stereo, but I have to assume that by 1959 they knew how to do that. Do I have a live link anywhere for the mono version of this album? Not sure if I do, and if I do, it's going to be a pretty lo-bitrate MP3 version, not like the fancy FLAC files I've been sharing with you this year. Let me see what I can dig up in the digital archives. Here it is! Don't expect much.

1. Sleigh Ride
2. White Christmas
3. Winter Wonderland
4. Jingle Bells
5. I'll Be Home For Christmas
6. Parade Of The Wooden Soldiers
7. Skater's Waltz
8. Home For The Holidays
9. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
10. Christmas Fantasy: Little Town Of Bethlehem; Silent Night; Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

  2. Now this is interesting! Unlike the other Leibert (Christmas at Radio City) LP you shared, this album has the same track list as the earlier mono LP, and this definitely sounds like true stereo (not fake). Could the 1957 mono LP be a "fold-down" from an original stereo mix, as you say? Could Westminster have been recording in stereo in 1957? I know RCA and Capitol were dabbling in it then, but I didn't think Westminster would have been so cutting edge. Another Christmas LP mystery!

    1. I believe Westminster was recording in binaural stereo earlier than 1958 and releasing it on reel-to-reel tape. When they started I can't say, but I think that's the same here. The mono version seems to be a folded version of the stereo, whereas the earlier record appears to be a stereo re-recording. I could be proven wrong on all of this, but that's where I'm at today. :)
