2022 At 78 RPM-New Year's Special

The year is about to draw to a close and so is this long series of 78s from The Internet Archive. But before we reach the end, I've got a special collection of songs that might be appropriate for New Year's Eve listening. It's a big pile of Auld Lang Syne versions, as well as plenty of What Are You Doing New Year's Eve. There's an extra heavy dollop of songs about midnight, and a few songs that are probably about something else entirely, but I thought the titles at least were appropriate for the time. The songs about midnight allowed me to do a pretty deep dive into the Blues and R&B, some genres that aren't too well represented the rest of the year, though they do pop up from time to time. If you listen to the whole collection at once, it may turn out to be a bit of a downer, so I suggest listening in small doses here and there so you can keep your mood up. I don't have a whole lot of New Year's content for you, though that's pretty much the same every year, it's hard to find. But here's a single with a B-side that may fit the bill. This is Jim McGuirt And Company Featuring Bob Ferrell With Bob Schlemo And Ken Veenstra, and the record features Why Can't Every Day Be Like Christmas b/w Resolutions (Sunsation 7" 45 RPM SR-12861/12862, Mono). This may be a local piece since I see a mention on there of Tampa, Florida. If that's correct, then it looks like Jim passed in 2019.

Lost La Rosa

My buddy Buster was looking for Christmas music by Julius La Rosa, and I thought I had shared this US Navy LP with him guesting on it many years ago. But try as I might, I couldn't find hide not hair of it here at the blog. But I did a deep search of some old archives, and finally found a recording of it. There were no scans, so I must not have ever finished it. I was able to come up with the original LP through sheer luck, scanned it, and now I can finally share it with you here at the blog as part of my series of US armed forces albums begun more than a decade ago. In fact, this rip of mine is more than a decade old, though the exact year I recorded it is still a mystery, as is the date when Julius joined up with the US Navy to record it. But for your post-Christmas listening, this is The United States Navy Band & Julius La Rosa Sing Noel (The United States Navy No Number, Stereo).

The Age Of Aquinas

The is the very last piece of vinyl I bought and recorded before the holiday season began at Thanksgiving. A friend was visiting from out of town, so we met up in Tarpon Springs, a city in Florida known for it's large Greek population and natural sponge harvests. There's a quaint little dock area where the boats come and go, lots of restaurants and tourist shops, but all I could see was the sign that said "Records". It was Sunday, and the first time we walked by the place was closed up tight. But right after lunch I tried again, and this time they were open. Surprisingly, they had a Christmas section, and this was the only record in the stack that I didn't already have. So I grabbed it, paid my three dollars, and threw it in that car. I think I recorded it the next night, but didn't finish up the processing until recently. It's a better than average college choir, but nothing earthshaking. I like the simple cover though. The theme this time is still skiing, but the music is more country rock, certainly rooted firmly in the early seventies instead of the early sixties.
