Granny Music

One of my major achievements in the 2010 sharity season was putting a copy of this record out there for all to hear.  Took me forever to find a copy, and when I did, it took a lot of work to cut it into chunks and prepare it for you folks.  That was some years ago and I should probably revisit it someday, but not this year.  I'm still looking for a stereo copy, but I'm thinking those may be hard to find since I've seen it described as the rarest stereo pressing in RCA history!  For more info, please click back to my original post, but the long and the short of it is that Grandma Moses doesn't sing, she tells stories about Christmas and her early years.  The music is provided by Ralph Hunter, Skitch Henderson and some music boxes.  It's a nice listen, but not the sort of thing that gets played on the radio.  So if you're interested, please give a listen to Christmas With Grandma Moses (RCA Victor LOP-1009, Mono, 1958).  Enjoy!

All The Skitch

Another one that I wanted to squeeze in here before the big day is this half-holiday LP from former Tonight Show bandleader Skitch Henderson.  I originally shared the Snow Holiday half of this LP back in 2006, but it wasn't until 2012 and a remaster that I shared out the whole thing, including the Sun Holiday side.  But that still leaves you with only half a Christmas LP...  So I decided to search for all the holiday bonus tracks I could find that I had collected over the years and throw them into the pot as well!  So you get seven bonus tracks, one of which is a spoken-word track from an Army Reserve LP I shared out earlier this season.  So if you put all the Winter tracks together, you get a pretty decent seasonal LP.  So please start with Skitch Henderson At The Piano Conducting the New York Philharmonic-Winter Holiday (Columbia MS 6381, Stereo, 1962).

Couldn't let Christmas arrive without sharing out eight Christmas songs from my favorite sixty French girls.  This perpetual Christmas favorite dates back to 2005, the first year of Ernie (Not Bert).  I remastered it in 2011 for better sound, and I'm bringing it back again today. More Batman

Since my last share was the guy who played The Penguin on the old Batman TV series, this next one should be the guy who occasionally played The Mad Hatter.  Certainly not the most popular villain on the show, but I don't have any Cesar Romero Christmas music, and Eartha Kitt's stuff is all available elsewhere.  So you're going to have to make do with David Wayne (not Bruce!) narrating some Christmas story for you.  Enjoy!  This is the 2012 remaster of a share I first brought you in 2006, before I knew who this guy was, I just liked the cover. Late December Back In '63

I've been trying to get more remasters up here but failing miserably.  Here's a quick one using the old artwork from my original share back in 2006, but it's a new rip from last year.  I think the sound is light years ahead of that old one, so turn it up loud and enjoy The E.F. MacDonald Company Presents Christmas Classics 1963 (E.F. MacDonald EFMX-63, Stereo, 1963).  The first side is Christmas stories narrated by the original Penguin himself, Burgess Meredith, while the second side is a set of international carols conducted by Joe Reisman.  Good stuff.  I'm still missing a couple of these promos from E.F. MacDonald, gotta dig those up sometime.

Cameo (Not Camo)

Nice little LP here featuring samples played by the arranger from the books they wanted you to buy.  I forget exactly where I found this, but the record sleeve was stuffed with not only the record but also two music books that went along with the two sides of the record.  It was quite the fat package.  I scanned the front of the two books for you as well, but no the back or the sleeve because it's blank.  This is simple solo piano medleys, not sure if it's any good.  I'm sure some of you might like it.  Please download and give a listen to John W. Schaum-Christmas Cameos/More Christmas Cameos (Spin 7245, Mono).  There's 10 medleys on here with 3-4 songs each, I'm too lazy to type them all in.  :(

Stereo Randolph!

Here's a record I was very excited to find sometime in the past couple of years!  Long time visitors to the blog might remember my shares of the two Christmas albums from The Randolph Singers, and I think one single, but they were all in mono.  The catalog is a little unclear, so I don't have dates on everything, but apparently, at one time or another, they remade their first LP in Stereo! I didn't do an A/B test, but the times on the different tracks lead me to believe it is different, and was re-recorded sometime later.  (The track sequence has changed as well.)  Earliest mention of a stereo version I can find is in a 1959 Hi-Fi/Stereo Review from December of that year.  So maybe that's the date.  But trust me, if you liked the mono, you're going to love the stereo!  This is The Randolph Singers-Christmas Carols (Westminster WST 15052, Stereo, 1959?).

Christmas In The CLE

Since I just revisited Christmas in Detroit, I figure it's time to revisit Christmas in Cleveland.  So here's a great little album put together from various Cleveland-area high school choral groups.  Not sure of a date on the vinyl, but I first shared it back in 2006 and heard from a couple of people that attended the high schools in question, though never from anybody who might actually be on the record.  Maybe this time the record will find it's way to the right person who can tell us all about this recording.  Without further ado, here is Christmas In Cleveland (Delta Records Of Ohio, Processed and Pressed by Columbia XCTV-84680/1). Christmas In Motown

I'm afraid you won't be getting any music from me here on the Motown (or Tamla) label, but you will get some music that was recorded in Detroit, Rock City!  Interesting stuff, though I don't know if soulful or funky are words I would ever use to describe any of this. The Worst

I'll segue from a great LP cover for children to what is quite possibly the worst.  I assume a child drew this cover, and I'm sure some parent loved it, but it's just not very good.  Maybe you could use the child's drawing as part of a larger element, but as is, I'm not diggin' it. I've never been too sure if I liked this cover or not. One of those record I grabbed just for the cover, and what a cover it is! Look at that jolly Santa!  The music is almost beside the point.  But this is a music blog most of the time, so you want the music.  I think this share hails from 2010, but it's back today for an encore.  This is Chorus And Orchestra-Christmas In America Sing-Along (Richmond (London) S 30104, Stereo, 1961).  Quite the economy of naming there for the group.  Probably some random European group.

Get Off My Knee!

Here is what may be the best Christmas album I have shared all season!  Where else are you going to get half of Starsky & Hutch singing Christmas music for you?  Well, you might get it from Lee over at Music You Won't, because that's where I first learned of it's existence, but ten years later I finally have my own copy to share.  I found this is a small thrift store in a small out of the way town in the middle of nowhere in south Florida.  I guess it's so far out of the way that other record collectors don't bother with it, and I frequently find good stuff out there when I have a few hours to waste in driving out there.  Once you hear this record, you'll agree that it was worth the trip.  This is And A Sled...And A Catcher's Mitt...And A Puppy...And A Popgun...And A Big Christmas Album For Merv Griffin & TV Family (MGM SE-4401, Stereo, 1966).  Not sure how they came up with such an awkward title, but that's what it says.

A Blast From My Past

I would be remiss if I didn't share my favorite Southern Gospel Christmas record with you again this year.  One of the Christmas records I remember from back when I was a wee tyke, though we had the original cover shown down below, I was surprised that I could sing along to it when I found a new copy years later.  I guess you always remember the things from your youth on a subconscious level, whether you realize it or not.  My original mono share of this LP was back in 2007, and I shared the stereo version with you in 2011.  I think it may be due for a remaster, but until then, this rip will have to make due.  This is James Blackwood And The Blackwood Brothers & Hovie Lister And The Statesmen-O Come, All Ye Faithful (RCA Camden CAS-2361, Stereo, 1969).

It Was A Different Time

One of the rarer things in my collection is this soundtrack from a 1981 TV special from Hawaii starring Jim Nabors.  I first saw this on the long-lamented blog Check The Cool Wax, and searched for years to find a copy.  I think I finally had to by it online but it had been so long that I was happy to pay for it.  Jim isn't the only artist on here.  Carol Burnett shows up in a couple of songs, and oh how I wish she had recorded more Christmas music.  (She did The Christmas Song many years ago, that's the only other one I can think of off the top of my head.)  The Brothers Cazimero and The Honolulu Boy Choir complete the lineup, and it's all pretty good stuff.  I've never seen the special this is taken from, but the back cover of the LP shows Tom Selleck & Susan Anton were there.  And the musical director is listed as Milton Delugg, though I hear no evidence of his antics anywhere on here.  So for some great listening, please download Christmas In Hawaii With Jim Nabors (Bluewater SLP-725, Stereo, 1981).

Ding Dong, Avon Calling!

You want to talk about an oldie?  This Avon training record share goes way way back to 2005 and I'm pretty sure I recorded it even before that.  I haven't listened to this in years, I don't even remember if it's any good or not.  I remember talking on the first side, and generic music on the flip side.  I'm sure it's good for something, so please download Avon Campaign 21 (Avon 10" 33 RPM, Mono, 1968).

The Hugo Award

Here's another big favorite request, and then some.  I've included every Hugo Winterhalter Christmas track that I know of, with the exception of those where he's backing up some big-name vocalist. I'll start out with the record above, Hugo Winterhalter And His Orchestra And Chorus-Christmas Magic (RCA Victor 10" LPM 3132, Mono, 1953).  This one was later reissued as a 12" record with a couple of non-Christmas tracks tacked on, so I've stuck with this one for the past few years.  From there, we go back in time to Hugo Winterhalter's Orchestra And Chorus-Blue Christmas b/w White Christmas (RCA Victor 7" 45 RPM 447-0875, Mono, 1950), and then forward to Hugo Winterhalter And His Orchestra-The Christmas Song Cha Cha b/w Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Cha Cha (RCA Victor 7" 45 RPM 47-7397, Mono, 1958).  The good stuff is always hidden away on the singles, and I think that's certainly the case here.  What else, oh, yeah, he covered Sleigh Ride on Wish You Were Here (RCA Victor LSP-1904, Stereo, 1959), that's a good one.  Pretty sure I've seen it released as a single backed by one of the other single tracks, but I'd have to look that up.  Before he was with RCA, he released a Christmas single for Columbia, Blue Christmas b/w You're All I Want For Christmas (Columbia 10" 78 RPM 38635, Mono, 1949).  That's going back a ways.  I may have never shared that one with you before, I can't find any trace of it at the blog.  I don't see any scans, either, so sorry about that.  Last but not least, there are 5 tracks from A Season For My Beloved (ABC-Paramount ABCS-447, Stereo, 1963) that I think fit into his Christmas catalog quite well.  I never scanned that artwork because I shared those tracks during Christmas in July.  That about does it as far as I can remember.  Am I missing anything? 20 tracks, that ain't bad.  And not too many duplicates.
