Who's Walther?

I'm a little confused by the name of this next group. La Porte is the name of the city in Indiana where the group hails from, but what does Walther League mean? Hmmm, a quick Google search tells me that the Walther League was a youth group associated with, you guessed it, the Lutherans. Time and time again this season, these religious group records have been somehow tied back to the Lutheran church. They must be a denomination that loves to sing. I see where the Walther League was disbanded as an entity in 1968, so this record must predate that. This cover was super glossy, and features an image I haven't seen on other Delta pressings. Perhaps it's a custom image created just for this record. Anybody else ever seen this one? Don't be afraid to pipe up if this one is familiar to you. While you're leaving that comment, give it listen! This is La Porte Walther League Chorus-The Shepherds Story (Delta XCTV 97247/97248 (La Porte, Indiana), Mono, c. 1964).

  1. Ernie, you gave a good clue as to the record date, but the back cover gives a better one. The label states the group was founded in 1933. Then the label goes on to say some members have been with them for the entire 31 years. Add that up and it looks like somewhere around 1964 for this record.

    1. I need to do a better job of reading the liner notes when I'm trying to tag these things... :(

  2. Never under estimate those Lutherans ;)

The cover reminds me of a children's book, "The Baby Born In A Stable", by Janice Kramer, published in 1965, by a Missouri Lutheran Publishing House - Concordia Publishing House, by their children's division (Arch Books).

    2. Yes, same bright color palette, but I don't think it's the same artist. The cover at Amazon is kind of small though, hard to tell.

  3. Hi Ernie, this is actually a mono LP (and your files are single-channel).

Thanks for the extended goodies this year!

  4. Well, well, well Ernie, I would say the Lutherans can sing. When I left the Catholic school and went back into the public school system, and into their school choirs, some of my best choir mates/friends were a few Catholics and Lutherans. We were brought up, or at least my group I hung around with, to sing from our heart to the Lord, first and foremost.
Anyway, this is a great album. I know I have said that about some others, but this one fits into that select group.
