Just A Little North

Here's a record put out by a church choir in the city just to the north of me, Bradenton, Florida. I lived there for quite a few years in a rental apartment before I bought my condo just across the county line in Sarasota, so I feel I have a pretty deep connection with the town. I can even remember coming down here in the summers as a kid to go to the beach. Taking a look at this place on the map, it looks like it's not too far from the office of my endocrinologist where I have an appointment next week. Maybe I should drive by and get a current picture. Looking at the latest images on Street View, I feel like I've driven by it before. It's pretty big and their website says they've been in the same spot since 1956, so they're pretty old as well. Now you can enjoy the sound of a Christmas presentation there in the year I was born. This is West Bradenton Baptist Church-Annual Program Of Christmas Music (Mark Custom Records MC 3074, Stereo, 1970). That stock cover image has likely been used on dozens of albums, but probably not many Christmas records. It's eerily reminiscent of my view of sunset when I lived in Bradenton. I was new to photography at the time and I was constantly removing the screen from my third-floor window and leaning out to shoot pictures of the sunset. The row of trees in the foreground separated our apartments from the tonier houses on the other side of the wooded area. Good memories.

1. Prelude-The First Noel
2. Processional-Silent Night
3. Anthem-Glory To God In The Highest
4. Cantata-A City Of The King

6. Hallelujah Chorus-The Messiah

  1. Hi Ernie,
Glad I checked you post when I did.
The BVG, in Berlin, is on strick again. So, no U-Bahn, Trams. or Buses. So what else is new. I heard they want more money, etc. I just checked out their hourly wage. I guess they should be organizers instead. I make "a lot" more than they do.
Anyway, I am waiting to be picked up from a client to go out of town to a colleagues office for organizing and a fun filled weekend to boot.
So, I guess, strikes can be beneficial in some ways.
So, as I wait, I am listening to this album, sounds really nice, like being in Mass. Plus I am decorating for Easter. So, is this Easter music?

    I use "so", a lot, I think...

I hope, before you sign off for this seasonal, a very lovely and welcomed seasonal sharing, you will drop as your last share that scary Vinny surprise?

    1. Working on the Vinny, but it has it's issues.

Was talking to my Aunt-in-law yesterday about living in Berlin when it was still divided. You had to exchange a minimum amount of western currency at the border at some ridiculous exchange rate, then you couldn't convert it back when you left. My uncle even got caught once for bringing in currency exchanged at the bank before time and got in quite a bit of trouble. Those were strange times. We all applauded the West German government for their support and acceptance of the East after the wall fell. That had to be a tough assimilation after a couple of generations apart.

  2. Yes...
Some in the East still feel as second class Germans it seems.
One of my clients, his parents live just around the corner from me, he has a bad feeling in some ways.
While he was not one of the privilege East Germans, they were close to being so.
His parents had quite a bit of money he says and they were well off compared to many others.
When their East German currency was converted to the West German currency, his parents lost about one half of their savings. He still is unhappy about this.
I have been to his flat. The last upgrade was after WWI I believe. There are bullet holes over the face of the building. There is a big 36 or 38, I cannot remember, still on the building in faded paint. This is so those living inside would remember where the air raid shelter bunker was located during WWII.
The street I live on is right next to where part of the wall was. On my side of the street is the safe side. Across the street, those houses were in fromt of the area the guards patrolled.
He told me, only privileged people could live there. Children under 14, I think it was, could walk on that side of the street. If older, you needed a pass. His best friend lived there. If their ball went over the back fence, one of the guards, if they were nice, gave it back. Otherwise they lost the ball.
There is a S-Bahn train station there. On our side, it was closed so the East Germans could not use it or go to the West, as there is a small tunnel under it. The other side it was open for the West Germans to use it.
The guards were there, because you can still run up the slop to get to the tracks, so they patrolled this area.

  3. Another quick comment, my ride is about due, but this album is a 9-10 I would say. I have to re-listen to it. Glad I had it to listen to.

  4. Thanks, folks, for the interesting discussion of East and West Berlin - and for the LP, of course!

    1. I think the comments are more interesting than my posts lately. I'm getting tired and bored, I'm sure I'll be completely out of steam in the near future and put this season out of it's misery. :)

    2. Misery for you maybe, I really have enjoyed this sharing season.
I think it is because you have prolonged it, with less shares after the main event.
At first, you were sharing way to many albums. It was overwhelming. While I think I may have finally downloaded about 200 of them, I just finished listening to the last one of them. Plus all those military shares I downloaded too.
      But...
I still have those 3 shares of 33rpm to start listing to.
Oh, even if I think a share is awful, I never delete them. They just get filed away with every share I collect.
Plus, once I have a breather, I plan on heading over to Busters blog and checking his shares. I have in the past downloaded something from Buster, but it was never on a regular schedule.

  5. Ernie, I have been quite busy lately... with working 6 days per week, shovelling snow, etc... but I look forward to seeing your posts, and downloading. Keep going as long as you can :)

  6. I would love to listen to this recording but every time I try to play it I get a message saying that windows can`t play it because something is missing or corrupt. Is there a possibility of getting this one reupped?

    1. Hi Anonymous,
This is Bryan. You are right.
      1. I almost always convert the FLAC to MP3@ 360 after I download the files.
      2. Then Windows always plays them.
      3. You can download for free, the VLC media player. While I rarely use this player, it is far superior I believe than Windows. I just have not set up my PC to allow VLC as my first choice.

    2. That sounds like a Wondows issue to me. Does your system support FLAC? And everyone once in a while my laptop quits playing them so I have to reboot.

Anyone else having trouble playing this one?

    3. Hi Ernie, I just re-downloaded the file for Scarsdale Community Baptist Church Senior Choir-Candlelight Carol Service And Christmas Eve Carol Service, these FLAC files play fine on my PC.

I am not sure if I converted, West Bradenton Baptist Church-Annual Program Of Christmas Music to MP3, on Friday, before I listened to it and posted a comment.

But anyway, the current FLAC for this album does not play. Strange, as FLAC usually plays? But, I convert as soon as possible as you already know.

    4. Well, lemme see what I can do. Might be tomorrow.

    5. OK, something weird is going on here. Windows doesn't recognize these files, but they play just fine in MediaMonkey, my main music software. That's the software I used to convert the original WAV files to FLAC, same as I've done for all the shares this season, yet this one is unhappy about something. I've got some research to do. :(

    6. Hi Ernie,
I use MediaHuman Autio Converter to convert from FLAC to MP3.
I also use it to upgrade a bite rate from? to 360.
Sometimes, I have a problem with a music file not working correctly or not taking updated information I am trying to enter. So, I re-convert the file again though MediaHuman, which fixes the problem.

Maybe, just trying to re-convert your files again though MediaMonkey again will clear it up.

    7. I've tried a couple different encoders and codecs, but the results are always the same. Windows doesn't see it to play it. It can't even see the track tags which show up just fine in MP3Tag. So here's a link to an MP3 version that you could likely create yourself from the original download files, but I made it as a test and will post here as a public service.

    8. Upgrading files from a lower bitrate to a higher one doesn't do anything to make them sound better. I liken it to writing in a couple extra zeros on your dollar bill. It doesn't turn it into a $100 bill... (And 320 is the max resolution for MP3 files.) I don't have the original WAV files here at this moment but nothing I did with the FLAC files changed anything. :(

    9. Good to know this about bitrate higher conversions. I never knew this. I thought it did so.
It makes sense now why the bitrates on MP3s from Amazon or iTunes are lower and of different bitrates within the same album.

    10. Hi Ernie,
I went ahead and downloaded your new link, even though I personally did not need it, and it works fine.
You may, at some point in time, want to up-date your copy-main comments to this post. Otherwise, you may have future visitors, I hope you have many, contacting you about this same problem. Who knows?

    11. I think most people who download my files play them in software other than the native Windows player, and they seem to be fine in all the other softwares I sampled. I took a look at all the folders of the stuff I've shared this season, and about twenty of them seemed to show the same signs of not being visible properly to Windows but working everywhere else, so the problem is not unique to this share. I'll keep an eye on this issue and see if a fix presents itself, but I'm not optimistic. Could be something stupid like Windows not liking umlauts in a file name, or certain text in the track tags. Such a thing would not surprise me.

  7. Thanks Ernie for this. I hope this helps others that have not already converted it to MP3.

    1. The FLAC files available for download were the ones I used to create the MP3s, so they work just fine. It's just that Windows doesn't like them for some reason. :(

  8. I took your advice and converted the files from flac to MP3. Worked without a hitch and I was able to play this recording. These group and school recordings are great. Hope you post more in the future. Thanks again for the great blog.

    1. Yeah, don't know why it works that way. Something in Windows is just not right. You could also try a different player for the FLAC files.
